It gets harder once they are already going too far. Try dropping the dog as it gets close to its desired limit, recalling and casting off again. I have never trained a spaniel but it works with HPR when you want them working tight in cover
B725
The idea with a springer is to get the dog to quarter in a figure of 8 but sideways on,the centre of the figure of 8 needs to be you. if you can master that the dog will work 3 to 4 meters each side of you but always touching base with you.If it starts pulling away stop it and always start it off again coming towards you never away from you. when you start make sure the wind is into the dogs face i.e. that is the way you want to go,walk it into the field at heel sit the dog up and then walk back 3 to 4 paces then pip the dog to you as it gets to you only then cast it off left or right.Never walk forward faster than the dog can cover the ground Edited February 18, 2013 by B725
cocker boy
When training the dog keep it very close to you by whistling then walking in the opposite direction.Take a couple of steps backwards as well if the dog is taking in too much forward ground. It is a lot easier to get the pattern opened up when out beating than pulling the dog back in.
