JDog
Desperate to get out after what seems like weeks without any shooting I went to a wood in the next village to roost shoot this evening. This is a wood which on the face of it should be perfect for roost shooting, a wood of ten acres of even-aged trees, a mixture of hardwoods and conifers all about 50' tall. Sadly the wood does not attract any great numbers of roosting pigeons and the best tally I have had has been a dozen. This is a mystery to me as the wood is in the middle of good pigeon country and I only shoot it three times a year. There was a strong northerly wind and most of the tree branches were coated on one side with snow. I achieved a modest bag of six pigeons (and one Jackdaw). All of the pigeons had crops jam packed full. Five were full of a mixture of rape leaves and Ivy berries, very much what I would have expected in these snowy conditions. The sixth bird had a crop full of Ash tree keys. This indicates to me some degree of desperation on the birds part as I cannot imagine what goodness it would get from such food. JDog
Was the 6th bird a youngster? No all of the birds were 'old' and in good nick considering the inclement conditions.
