Weather been pretty keech this week and although been oot a few times blanked till Friday.

Pretty grim first thing but by dinner things had brightened up with a fair bit of heat so packed the dugs and rifle and held away for a walk.Couple of hours in the woods didnt produce a chap but saw plenty including 3 bucks which had still to clean so jumped in the Jeep and took a drive around to see if any cushies were working the new sown.Unfortunately they were thin on the ground but from a bit of high ground i could see three roe oot on a grass park a couple of miles away.Managed to drive within 400 yards which would leave a slow walk up the march fence in full view but with the wind spot on it was ok.By the time i closed to around 200 there was only a buck in velvet left and he was grazing away non the wiser. To get a decent bit for the bipod i had to cross the fence but again it all went to plan and managed with nay probs.A fair bit of wind but the heat shimmer was still pretty bad so took time to get it right and when he presented side on took the shot.He was 177 away so saw the impact through the scope and all looked perfect with a good thump, jump and run to the wood edge. When he got there he turned looking in my direction, and for what seemed like ages he just stood there but i couldnt give him another pill as the backstop was non existant at this point.Eventually he staggered, dissapeared oot of sight and i was beginning to doubt the placement of the shot so took a slow walk to the Jeep and then drove to where i thought he was standing.Took Rab oot and straight away he found pins with a mass of blood which continued right to the wood.By the time i got to where he stopped i could see him about 5 yards further in and the stagger would have been the end of him.On checking the entry it was a wee bit low and had went through the jugular which explains the mass of blood.A nice 7 pointer which was just starting to clean.

Next morning gave Mac a shout at 5am and when ready held away. Most places can be viewed from the road in a couple of hours so fine handy early morning.First few places showed plenty deer but nothing shootable or suitable but the next had plenty in sight with a nice clean 6 pointer behind the fellas hoose.Every buck usually gets the pill here with it being young woodland but might leave some this year where the trees are up a bit but the area where he was has a lot of hardwoods so he had to go.Parked at the end of his road and had a stalk of 400ish again, over a couple of fences but nothing too difficult and we were around 120 of him with no dramas. To get a decent set up we had to cover the last 20 in full view but a very slow and canny approach got us to 114.Set up the sticks, again in full view but the back stop was no use so had to bide our time till he got more suitable.Must have been a good 10 minutes but he eventually obliged and on the shot he dropped on the spot. This time the heart was demolished and the result a cracking even mature 6 pointer.

Morning before had been out and saw 2 bucks, one clean mature and one still in velvet so got parked up which left me around 600 away from them. The stalk was a testing one, with very undulating gound which meant a very slow approach and scanning the binos every few yards or so although the first 200 up the ditch is easy.Had already checked the ditch before i had noticed the bucks so just grabbed the kit,let the dugs oot and held away at a good rate of knots.Wind was perfect so just put the heed down and walked but after less than 80yards a wee yearling buck jumped up from no-where and stood lookingat around 20 yards from us.Schoolboy error in not checking all the time, and although i could have shot him i decided to chance that he would play ball and go on his way quietly. Not so.Instead,he took away barking the whole time and headed right up the valley where the other two were.Even though i knew it was a waste of time,i still stalked in hoping but they were long gone.Another lesson learned, and especially morning time the need for scoping is a must with them wandering away from their normal haunts and appearing in places you dont expect.

That is all.
