Mentalmac
Hi everyone, May get shot down for asking this however I'm a bit new to the offroading game. Obviously All terrain tyres are the things I need, but in the interim whilst I can't afford them (due to spending all my cash buying the car!), would road tyres be ok for general dry field driving? As in, I got my 3 series stuck on the field a while back as it's got a slight slope (hardly anything but the 3 series noticed!). would road tyres on 4 wheel drive be just about ok for that? Sorry if It's a bit dunce to ask,
Mentalmac
Sorry, I meant 4X4! My typo! Obviously a 4X54 would be a bit hard to drive around... Sorry chaps
al4x
you'll be fine on road tyres while its reasonably dry, its only when it gets muddy that proper off road tyres make a difference.

EMcC
Talking about 'Off Road Tyres' at the moment is a bit sad for me. I parked up in an out of the way place on Sunday to do a bit of Deer watching and when I came back found I had a puncture. I went to my local garage on Monday and saw some tyres made by Falken, lovely big tread, smart pattern too. Wow says I to the garage guy, that looks just what I need, how much. Oh they are from £80 to £120 what size do you want. I told him I wanted a 255/55/19 V rated. The garage guy's eyes lit up with glee. Oh you want off road tyres then, they are no good and took me to his tyre bay. Tyres with much the same tread pattern as the ones I'd seen but the price was from £190 to £280 !!!!! Off road tyres have strengthened walls and are made of a different rubber composition, the size I wanted cost £240 and what made it worse was the 'puncture' looked like a deliberate stab wound to the wall by a 2" wide blade. So I just wish road tyres would do the same job as off road tyres it would be a lot cheaper for me as the tyre being replaced had only done 12,000.00 miles so just about half it's life used and left. al4x
there can be a plus point, certainly the grabber AT2's on mine look set to do 60K or so which compared to road tyres is usually somewhat better!

That's terrible for you. :-(. My neighbours kids have a habbit of letting air out of peoples tyres on our street for fun - explained kindly to them (honestly) that this could cause and accident and they would have to live the rest of their lives knowing it... but they then attempted to do my motorbike rear one night (They are only between 6 and 14) - I then went round there and told their mum (who tried to imply I was spying on her kids ***?) and went off on one about that they aren't that bad etc... so I repeatedly let the air out of their BMX tyres at dawn when I set out for my shoots and since then it's all stopped :-). I ended up giving them a choccie bar and explaining "it's annoying isn't it?, let's not do this anymore before one of us gets hurt, enjoy the choccie". haha hug a hoodie? ferguson_tom
My neighbour has a cherokee with standard road tyres and he uses his for plugging across fields to his digger when do ditching etc, so far he has only got stuck once but so did the other 4x4 that come to try and rescue him, had to call the farmer out with the tractor in the end. Just be sensible and you should be fine having all 4 wheels turning is what makes the big difference compared to the BMW your replacing. This week actually he has changed the fronts to General Grabbers but only because the old road tyres were getting a bit low. EMcC
On my previous Disco I had the New Grabber AT's but when I asked about them this time I was told they are no longer rated for my Vehicle so I don't know what I am going to do come Winter. The ones on there at the moment are Wranglers but I usually, well I have done in previous years, change all four tyres for Grabbers to go from October to March then change them back again come Spring. four-wheel-drive
you could try this you do not need to buy the tyres from them but it would give you an idea what would be ok on your truck. http://www.4x4tyres.co.uk/select-your-tyre-size/15inch-tyres-c-10_76_172.html
