Painting old decoys

Recommended Posts

Hi Dave iv got over 35 decoys iv hand painted .

I don't know what mr green uses but iv been using tester pots from B&Q £1 each . Iv been using the kitchen / bathroom paint its matt or satin water proof and tough .

I use a drill mounted wire brush to get all the old paint off and ruff up the plastic to hold the paint .

Then I spray the whole thing. i use Plasticote serface primer , it's a nice grey .

Then start painting .

A word of warning tho it takes me 24 hours to paint 12 decoys !!

Iv been looking into this and it's probably very true they do see in uv as part of there spectrum . But I think the technology in the paint might be a way off yet . It's certainly expensive stuff , and if its true they do see uv then the entire decoy would need to be painted the same , not just the white or grey parts .

I dont know if you know this but kestrels see in ultra violet , but it's believed that its focused on mouse urine and can follow cold traces up to the fresh urine that is warm coming from the encontinent mouse and target that way , it's been described as similar sight picture to the "predator" from Arnold scwarzanigger films!

I think it only makes up part of the story the uv thing as non of my decoys have it and I can shoot good bags ?

But there is the other part of me that thinks why not try it if you can justify the cost !!

I blend colours from the same paints to get them right iv copied dead birds as much as possible . There more detailed than mr greens but I'm not on a commercial setting like he is ( a friend has a few of mr greens so I can reference )

The surface primer is a similar shade to the tail and back of the wild bird so once the whole thing is primed I don't need to paint over it other than black for tail tip .

Il go and write down there colours and product names in a mo for you and try to take some pics . Give me an hour I should have something

No there not honest , there probably well over the top I don't know ?

Anything that builds your confidence helps I say .

I make floaters and bouncers too but no real pics of those .

Iv used old fishing rods and the telescopic fishing " whips " as the flexible part there much longer and work well along hedge rows but need strong winds .

Iv got to try a Hypa flappa type next they look so good but to expensive .

Yeah I'm Pretty sure they could do that , but it's expensive and you still might want to blend colours there's light coffee brown colours to the shoulders of the bird in real life but that's only if you want the as realistic as I believe mine are ?

If I was going to just freshen up some deeks I'd probably just buy a light grey and dark grey black spray and white for the neck and have done with it !
