lakeside1000
Got up early and headed out about 8 am, no decoys , just a bag of cartridges and the gun, went to my favourite spot under a flight line crossroads, The hide was quickly erected and as I settled in a pair of sheld ducks passed low over my head quickly disappearing into the mist, when I looked down right in front of me in a tyre track through the corn came a male muntjack deer, as he was down wind it didn't take long for him to pick up my scent and vanish into the knee high corn, First 6 shots brought down 5 pigeons and a rook, there was a thick haze or mist over the field but it didn't stop the birds from flying, just hard to see them coming, the flight lines were busy right up till 1.00 pm by which time I had 13 pigeons and 3 crows. Finally the sun broke through and the mist lifted, the wind increased from the north and birds began to change direction, dropping low over the wheat field in front of me and skirting along the down wind side of the wood to my back. I watched several birds move to the new line before packing my hide away and moving down to the corner of the wood where the birds were passing, I couldn't be bothered setting up again so armed with my trusty secutares, I cut away some brambles to form a natural hide in the ditch, I had only just dropped into it when the first pair presented, just time for one shot and down it came, within the next 20 minutes another 4 plus an old rook passed right over my head and were quickly despatched, Finishing on a high with 6 birds for just 8 shots, the days total 18 pigeons and 4 rooks, sadly not having a dog I was unable to locate 5 of the pigeons and 2 crows even though I watched them fall 4 into the wood and dense brambles and 3 into the middle of what is now a very dense corn field. Left the field at 4 pm very happy but very tired. So after three recent decoying sessions on a local farm with only a handful of pigeons and crows to show for hours of waiting around in the cold ,it was very rewarding to finally see a decent bag, my neighbour was also very pleased to get a few more pigeons into his freezer .
