The Ghost
Many years ago I had my trawler (Aurora) 1/4 mile off the shore line near Sellerfield and could see the cod end of the net floating behind the boat. As the net had only been in the water for 20 mins I was concerned we had a major problem, as I hauled the net in I started to see Cod. We had 22 boxes on that first haul so put it down again and trawled again pulling the net in ever 20 mins or so. It was the best days fishing/trawling I ever had, I pulled into Whitehaven (Donnans) with fish all over the deck as we did not take enough boxes. I can't remember how many boxes we landed but I gave the crew £1,700.00 for 1hr 20mins fishing this would have been in 1989. They were also the biggest cod ever landed by my boat, this was middle of June....we unloaded and were back at it...happy days.
THE MEK
Was that 1700 each mate
The Ghost
Share went 4 ways, 2 crew 1 for the boat and 1 for myself. Hammered it for a full day, and everyone had a great week off. I had a net built for the rocks (Not many) we tended to hit from time to time, it had large Icelandic floats along the foot rope that had holes in. This net would hit a rock then roll over it, I remember an old tractor being on my chart that we had to miss thats how close we went in....about 20 foot of water. A good price for cod would have been about £1.00 a Kilo (£6.00 a stone) at that time.....so may be X 5 today so about £8,500 per person for just over an hours trawling. I did also have six weeks when I could not get out, so swings and roundabouts I know the best/biggest plaice we ever got were off Whitehaven harbour and very close in, I was lifting the net and could be landed 2 mins later.
