MAB1954
Just started reloading some of you may remember my previous posting re: new to reloading. I'm using a MEC 600 jr and have a beam scale to check powder and shot weight. I'm reloading 24 gram cartridges so using MEC Part No 301 78 charge bar. For my first 10 cartridges I weigh powder and shot drops during each cartridge reloading cycle. The shot seems light at an average of 22.6 grams with a deviation of 0.5 grams [22.3 - 22.8]. I move the charge bar with a slow firm motion but never drop more than 22.8 gram. I expected 23.5 - 24.0 gram. I'm using lead shot size 7.5. deershooter
24 gram charge bars are manufacturered for 9 shot for skeet shooting, the 9 shot has smaller voids giving 24 grams. wWth 7.5 the voids between the shot are larger hence 22-23 grams you have 2 options, enlarge the shot hole by 5 tho or bush a 28 gram charge bar with tape untill it throws what you want . I am in the process of making meck charge bars with removable shot bushings but an at least 10 days away due to materal delevery Deershooter
Guest cookoff013
yes the shot bars drop light, even with small shotsizes. this is because the different lead types. low antimony lead... so very heavy / dense lead in #9 should still drop 7/8oz or "less"..... i bought a 2nd hand bar once, had been reemed out to drop 26gram of #6 shot. good for checking. MAB1954
OK. Its nothing I'm doing. So question, do most people just go ahead with what the charge bar drops or fiddle around with tape until you get what you want. Sounds a good project deershooter but I do not want to start machining charge bars and making numerous bushings at this time, but good luck with yours. Guest cookoff013
personally, i just select a decent recipe that has a decent pressure, then drop the "reduced" lead load, i live with it because i know that even in the extreme variation case of slightly more powder i`ll still get near the published "safe" pressure. just ignore that problem, i do and its cheaper. sitsinhedges
As mentioned on another thread, get a tapered reamer and open up the bottom of the bush until you get what you want. I also use pieces of electrical tape if mine drop to much cut off the reel with a craft knife 2 or 3 layers thick.
Floating Chamber
Also, only good round and true uniform size shot will meter through accurately, time after time.
