Frenchieboy
I have just had a Tenterfield Caller arrive to add to my collection of Fox callers as it was a very highly spoken of fox caller. It took a bit of mastering to get it sounding right but after a lot of prictice and some "very queer sounding noises" I think I have mastered it well enough to get foxes coming in to it. My question is: How many times would you blow your Tenterfield while out foxing (i.e. Two three or four blows at a time) and how long would you leave it between each "burst" of calls (i.e. Is there such a thing as "over calling with a Tenterfield) What are your thoughts please? steve_b_wales
Tom Varney & Andre Georgescu, both excellent Australian fox shooters, start off by calling very loud and continous for a minute or two. When the fox is in sight, they use the caller more quieter. You might be able to Google either of them and see how they do it.
fieldwanderer
I made my own and have been experimenting with it a little bit, I don't think it matters too much about how often or regularly you blow it - it seems to work best if you do it completely random but quite a lot. I try to imagine how much noise a rabbit would make if it was caught in something and squeeling, though I've never known a rabbit in a snare make much noise I guess they do and I should think its quite persistent if they were panicking. Seems to work quite well pausing when you see the fox on its way, they often seem to hurry a bit more - perhaps fearing their meal's getting away. Peskyfoxs
I tend to try and mix the length of call and kind of get louder and louder over 4-6 calls (my theory being to make the rabbit sound more panicked/stressed) then leave for a minute or 2 and start again I often swap to a quiter call once I see the fox as I find it hard to do gentle squeaks to keep the Foxs interest Hope that makes sense
The Essex Hunter
I have one brought and one I made; There can be some time after calling for a fox to appear (if one does) A few times we have waited and waited nothing but then a last look with the lamp will find a set of eyes out at distance. A few things I have found using mine are… Still nights are not the best.. The harshness is great for getting them out of cover and coming you way but they don’t run in like on the YouTube videos.. I get them in around 200 yds then change to a hand squeak… If that fails then I just WHACK IT… TEH
activeviii
little soft 5 or 6 little calls, then check, the amount of times i have been stalked by charlie within 30 seconds of first call. It is ridiculous how many times it has happened. i then give a little more call power and check again. if noting showing i will give it some. and boy is it loud. eye splitting loud. but it works. only problem i have is if it is very cold then i cant get the call working. very annoying as i have to switch to a different call. Frenchieboy
Mines quite loud but it took some getting used to before I could master it and get anything except bubbles out of it!
MBW
They're mint little calls the first time I used mine three blows and a fox came charging in from about 250yrds away soo close it coulda cocked its leg on the rife barrel I have always tried to mimic a rabbit being stoated the sort of long drawn out pitiful screams becoming more laboured and raspy and dieting away to nothing it seems to work for me, but I do also use it just two blasts one shrill and one raspy just to see if there is anything about sometimes as I am moving around an area or in among livestock hope some of that might help you out
