Blood in Urine

Hi

I have a 5 year old cocker who is fit and well in himself apart from he has had blood in his urine quite a lot according to vet tests, after a check for anything sinister it appears he has an inflammed bladder which has crystals forming in the urine which is causing the inflamation leading to blood in urine.

Vet has more or less indicated that the only cure is a urinary dried dog food at about 80.00 for 14kg, if this is right well so be it but was just seeing if anyone on hear has had this issue or can give me any advice about treatment.

Regards

Kev

im really surprised to hear that the possible cure is dried dog food..........ive had and still have spanners and have seen the blood in the urine.....it usually means that the dog is not taking in enuff fluids and is on a dried food diet......same with cats as well......have you changed his food ? and see what happens....

Ok simply if its prone to bladder infections then indeed the answer to keeping it sorted is usually a "prescription" diet from hills or the likes, however despite the name you don't need a prescription and can buy it online.

If its canine KD they are recommending you can get it down close to £50 a large bag

at a guess the protein level is high for this dog and most of the special diets use low protein to help. You've a couple of options take the vets advice and go straight to a special diet and any medications in the meantime and get over this instance and then try a lower protein standard dog food possibly with a certain amount of tinned food. The tinned food has a high moisture content so is pushing more water through the system which helps reduce instances. If it reoccurs then the special diet but buy it online and you'll save a packet

not really I can only say check the bags and try and get it as low as you can for the moment, out of main working time it should be fine on a low protein one. Whether you can feed more raw meat or not i don't know as logic would say that would push the protein levels up really you need to get either a vets advice on it or an animal nutritionist.
