Varget in 6.5x55 load help.

Recommended Posts

Thanks guys. The problem is the lack of reloading supplies here in Shetland, I don't have many options. I can get H414, H4895, H4198 and varget, I think I can get some IMR powders too but not sure which ones.

If you can get IMR4831 and don't mind using 140s then that is a great combination.. I use it to very good effect in my R8 6.5x55 gives 1/2 moa groups or better at 100m with Nosler Partitions

Thanks fellow swede shooters. I went out tonight with the fine night and loaded up some 123grainers with varget. I went for 5 @ 35gr, 5 @ 35.5gr and 5 @ 36gr, here is the results.

35gr 7/8"

So far the rifle has shot everything I have loaded well, granted its only 9 different loads but all under an inch, Wish the .223 loading had started off as well as the 6.5

Thanks vipa I will ask what IMR powders my dealer has the next time I see him, although varget seems to be working really well for me and I know he still has a couple of tubs left.

If youre getting that kind of accuracy at 100(?) yards id leave well alone. Varget may not be best suited to the 6.5 but its working for you.

I use Reloder 22 as its the cheapest (tight ****** me) and the accuracys good. I also load a light load through it 44gns which is the start load in the manual. I also load a 47gns load with ballistic tips for foxes but thats a barrel burner.

Also most of my loads are 140 gn heads except the barnes one im developing. may i ask why you are using 123gn heads?

I was gonna use Varget in the .308 but its not that available in Norfolk and it tends to be expensive too. Reloder 15 is more than adequate for me.

If you look back through my post history dec 2011- present youll find quite a few threads about reloading the mighty swede!

Just to try something different and also having difficulty getting bullets as cliff in america has virtually nothing left and it cost a lot to have to get either of the two gun dealers here to get stuff in. The other two bullets I have tried were the 140gr partitions and the 140gr gamekings both very accurate.

140gr partitions (5 shots @100)

Beardo. Interesting data. Looking at the N160 info there is a huge difference in load at 140grn between the two tables. Any ideas as to why? Is the data from different manufacturers?

Update to previous post. Big difference on all powders. Would you mind letting us know what the two data sources are please? Ta.

Ok thanks. Hornady always seem To quote conservative figures. Cheers

Some figures for the swede are deliberately lower due to there being two actions, the older military and the newer modern actions. Most guys I know with a 6.5 use the higher loads.
