benelli 1
Hi I dont know much about air rifles as i am a shotgun man myself. But i am thinking about buying one for crimbo to teach the littlin about gun safety. I dont want anything special just a solid reliable gun with good power. Was looking to spend about £100 max. I have looked on some sites but their are so many to choose from and i have'nt got a clue. Knowing me i would end up buying a piece of crud. It has to be new, break barrel spring type, and also a .177. Could any of you guys please help me as i want to get my order in. Thanks
SNAKEBITE
For £100 all you are going to get is cheap Chinese junk. Either spend a bit more, buy second hand or don't bother. Chinese junk=Waste of time/money and energy.
beatingisbest
how old is your lad? A crosman ratcatcher is really good, very accurate lightweight and small enough for a youngun or an adult alike. It is CO2 though you have to buy the capsules but it is worth it. benelli 1
Thanks guys for your input. He is 7 but already a keen sportsman. I did have a look at them their ratcatchers but wasn't keen on buying co2 bottles all the time. I know i am not going to get much of a gun for £100 maybe i could go to 150 at a push but no more. I dont see any point whatsoever buying a nice gun as it 's only going to get scratched and knocked about. Maybe i will give the ratcatcher a go. pin
Better off looking about for a secondhand springer. Teach the lad to shoot with that, much better than costing you an arm and a leg for co2 refils
caplock
I take it it's not going to need to be a full power jobby?? Weirauch HW25 is a nice quality starter / junior sized rifle, come in at about £100 new or for a little bit more come as a kit with tele sight, target catcher, targets etc all in one box. Easily wrapped for xmas . They will always remember their first air rifle, I do, along with the responsibility. P.S board up the greenhouse and sell the cat!!! benelli 1
I remember my first rifle it was my dads old Diana .177. I thought i was the bees knees with that gun. I remember one day i ran out of pellets so i started to fire small stones through it. Needless to say i soon busted it
Lord Geordie
If he is only 9 i would take him to try a few junior rifles out as adult ones will tend to have too much stock length for him. You will find a few half decent second hand ones for around £100 to £150 HW30 for about £130 new LG

1 of 5
At 7yo a springer is going to be too hard for him to cock unless it's well down on power. The Baikal IZH-61 runs around 3.5 ft/lb so should be cockable and most importantly it runs a 5 shot clip so keeping small fingers away from the breech area. It's also adjustable for length of pull so can be adjusted to fit. They are reputedly quite accurate for £60 and way better than the Chinese stuff. I had an IZH61 and it near took my fingers off The trigger was set so sensitive when i got it i cocked the side lever and put the stock on the bench to place the mag in the receiver and the side lever slammed shut on my wrist and took a rather nasty size chunk of skin out of my arm Be careful what you buy
beatingisbest
the ratcatcher is a very surprising tool, very easy to use, very hard to catch any skin or anything and deadly accurate out of the box, it is very under estimated Its worth having a look at one

Getting a springer means the lad learns the right techniques. How many of us can now shoot as accuratley with a springer as we can with a pcp? Learn the basics and then move up. Suffolk shooter
Good tip, buy a copy of AirGunner or Airgun World and look at the for sale section, plus I recommend a Gamo gun, good solid, reliable break barrel sporters/hunters. Other thing is look for Second hand in Gunshops, sometimes you can get a good Weihrauch with scope or similar for just over £100 and if you say it's for your lad they might be nice and chuck in a tin of pellets and some paper targets as well. All the best which ever way you go, your lad will enjoy it.
