wannabe_keeper
Well today was the day we got our birds in on my little farm shoot. Weather was nice all week and then it goes and rains today! Typical. However we still managed to get the birds in and they weren't in bad shape, and soon found the afternoon sun spots to dry out and within an hour of being in were nice and spread out and pecking about feeding. Also managed to collect about 40 eggs in the first hour! Think i need an incubator! A big thank you to Simon (Amatex) who i got chatting to on here and supplied us with our birds and delivered them. Highly recommended. Edited June 22, 2013 by wannabe_keeper

Scully
Great to see..We got ours on the 15th; 128 birds(give or take) and only one casualty, and up to yesterday had collected 127 eggs.We have four incubators on the go! A couple of last seasons cocks have been strutting round the pen ever since they arrived.

scotslad
Have u pulled there wing feathers to stop them flyingover straight away? Do people still do that with ex-layers?
wannabe_keeper
Yeah clipped hard so should stay put for a while. Some people do and some people don't as of they do get out are easier targets but hopefully won't come to that just yet!

scotslad
i thought u couldn't clip ex-layers? I see u've answered I take it there not throu the moult then? I thought if clipped feathers won't grow back till next moult next year and u pulled the primaries. Seen us having to do that with mature 61/2 week old poults as blood quills throu Edited June 22, 2013 by scotslad

Seen us having to do that with mature 61/2 week old poults as blood quills throu Thats why I asked the reason there should be pulled is because a lost/pulled feather will grow back straight away but a cut feather will not grow back till next moult and it may just be a bit late for that this year. Ferretboy111
Agree, clipped adult pheasant feathers wont grow back till next moult ! Youll have a nice lot of fox fodder there if they are clipped, make sure your beating dogs are good at pegging them to get your returns! HotShot!
Were they all ok this morning ??
wannabe_keeper
Yeah all good none out and only 1 dead one which I thought would die as was not in the best shape out of all of them released yesterday. No sign of attempted entry by fox! Hung some cd's up to deter crows/magpies as I think they have been hammering the eggs as hardly any there! Picked a few to try and incubate though. Next jobs are to straw the ride, and start building feeders outside the pen as I'm sure they'll be out in no time!
HotShot!
Ah sounds great ! I would advice putting some posts in the ground to support a piece of ply about 3-4ft high. Put some eggs in a larsen and hopefully catch a bit of vermin. High up to prevent pheasants getting into it and causing a nuesence.
