henry d
Went out to bait an area for fox last week and saw a doe that was limping badly in an area of bracken. I managed to crawl up to a position where I could take a shot and she lay down which meant a head shot, at the shot she got up fairly sharpish and legged it. I went to the area of the shot and after searching found a single drop of blood. Not good. It didn`t look like I had clipped her jaw and I spent a considerable time trying to track her, to no avail. Last night I was on my way to bait up and saw a rump in amongst the fronds close to where I saw her last week, looking through the binos I saw it was a doe and when she walked it was with a pronounced limp. Once again I crawl through the grass and thistles and eventually get into a position to shoot her, but as she is walking amongst the bracken I have to move positions myself. When I get into a decent position I see her lie down An hour and a half later and two, well grown, buck fawns look like they are about to wander into me, but fortunately they wander back towards her, but bypass her and carry on. Good they aint hers! Ten minutes later and she gets up, steady onto her about 60 yds away and she drops to the shot to the head (body was amongst the bracken). Gave it a couple of minutes and goes out to her and find out that last week I drilled her lug with the Vmax and that she was really emaciated and looking at her teeth you can see why. No signs of damage to front legs, or back, but I am feeling relieved to have put her out of her misery as she was a real bag of bones, totally barren and not a scrap of meat never mind fat on her, she reminded me of a mixy rabbit the way she was so boney. henry d
did you open her up for a look? Yeah, totally barren, no milk, lungs were a bit dodgy and she had no fat in her that I could see. Just a shame I didn`t get her first time out.
