Following on from another thread,I don`t have a credit card but I believe the likes of Visa and Mastercard will not charge you if your details are stolen or don`t receive the goods bought over the net.

Is this the easiest and safest way to buy over the net? I intend to pay off the bills every time they arrive and that will be infrequently.

Cheers for all(sensible) answers :stupid:

Yes, credit card is easiest. With Barclaycard and certainly most others the purchase is also insured and if you don't get it you don't pay. Never been skanked on a CC transaction yet but you should be covered better than a debit card.

I have been skanked three time on the debit card.

Once a few years back for £500. A phone call to Barclays and the money was back in the account in 3 hours time. More recently last year two transactions worth about £50 from the US took about 2 weeks to sort but after I kicked up a fuss they gave me £50 extra as a gesture of goodwill. Now I only use the CC. At least then it aint my money anyway if it gets skanked.

Incidentally, the first time I think it was a dodgy computer shop in london that kept a copy of the reciept and then used the details. The second time I think some kid just got lucky with a card generator as it was for a minor ammount and it was on my wifes card whcih she rarely uses and certainly not on any US sites!

I buy extensively on the Internet and some have been high priced items.

I pay using my credit card (MBNA), or PayPal (linked to the MBNA credit card).

This gives me satisfactory protection, as demonstrated on three occassions when I have not received goods I paid for (probably less that 1% of my transactions).

Even though one of the transactions was through PayPal, MBNA credited my account immediately and withdrew the payment from the Supplier.

There are obvious ways you can protect yourself.

I wouldn't buy a high price item from somewhere like eBay, or from a private individual.

Ensure that any website you give card information to has security in place (padlock emblem ).

Don't give your banking details to anyone.

I have heard this before, and whilst it makes sense. Anything anyone could want. i.e. name, branch, sort code and account number can be found on a cheque :stupid:

If you pay by Paypal Ebay will cover you :stupid:

p.s. I think the fonts on this site are ******** atm. Look at the pound signs in my last post! This is on my pc a GBP sign: '£'

Just as a follow up to this, there is a fairly new website www.garlik.com which is currently free but will give you a copy of your credit report detailing far more than you thought possible just by giving them a few details. It goes back over about five years and shows you lots of places and people you are linked with. Quite scary what they can find out, which anybody can if they know where to look.

Here is an article on them in the Daily Telegraph. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/arts/main.jhtml...23/ftsurv23.xml

Big Brother is watching.

The credit report is only 2 or 3 days but the full report can take 3 weeks. Mine did.

Henry,

When buying on line look out for a couple of pointers to a secure site.At the point in the transaction where you are going to enter details of your card check for two things. The site address at the top of the page should begin with 'https:' without the inverted commas. It normally begins with 'http'.Also look for a yellow padlock,if you are using Internet Explorer 6 this will be to the bottom right of the page.If you have upgraded to Internet Explorer 7 it is at the top of the page to the right of the address. Buying on the internet is in my opinion no less safe than passing your card details over the phone or filling in the same details on an order form which often includes your signature as well.

Never had any trouble buying online!

Best to use a credit card, as they offer better protection against fraud, will refund for items not delivered and will also refund if the company you are buying from go bust and dont deliver the goods (like Courts, the furnishing company).

as with anything, just be careful about where you shop.

You are probably more likely to be mugged or have your details copied at a cashpoint/chip and pin machine!
