That I can not tell you untill I have physically tested one that does, and as yet I have to do so.

Are you brand tied or do you play with lots of mods?

What is the best sound reduction mod you have PERSONALLY verified for a HMR, do you have a list, Best, 2nd, 3rd etc, what dB figures are attached to them?

Cheers

Deckers what he describes is quite plausible. Its more a flinch from the rabbit than a duck but as the round he is describing is SUB sonic, the sound will arrive at the rabbit before the round. The greater the distance of shot the more pronounced the effect. Man you bite people very quickly my friend.

Yep. A regular occurrence. I've always put it down to the instinctive duck as something unknown whistles over the top of its head. Damn it! Missed again.

Deckers, I deal with mainly large center fire mods, all the way to .50. I have as yet to play with .17, so like I said I would love to test. There are many many people producing mods and making all sorts of claims but very few that back it up with real time evidence. Watch this space as I am over the next couple of months going to post some vids. with factual evidence. Some mods may turn out to be more effective than mine at dimming noise, but that's a trade off with weight and price. I truly believe the job of a mod is not to unbalance the rifle, and to protect the shooters hearing without burning a hole in his pocket..............the James Bond silencing you can leave to others to try...........they will not have success unless we go the rout of the Black out and Whisper.............a waste of time in the hunting environment , more a close up man killer................ something we have also produced for various more specialist groups shall we say.

Lots of tests have been done on mods, Shooting Times/Shooting UK, are well known for them, lots of others, I'm still not quite sure how scientific they are, and the difference in performance in relation to size/weight/price was really quite small, with some of the smaller cheaper models performing better than some of the bigger more expensive models. Frankly that is what I have also found having personally used a lot, and been in the company of many with an assortment of mods, but that is just my ear! I am talking here with more emphasis on the HMR/WMR, but pretty much the same applies to the Centrefires where weight/balance can become a serious issue.

Noise level is one thing from a mod, but there is a difference in tone as well from many, from a relatively dull thud to a much more high pitched tinny twang (I don't mean a sub sonic .22lr), I'm convinced speed/size/weight/type/etc. of bullet has some effect on this as well as the type of mod.

As yet I have not found a HMR/WMR mod I am impressed with, at any size or price, and I have tried a few centrefire mods on them as well. They all do a job, and as you say, they will/can only ever bring noise levels down to a certain point and that is it, hence why SAK does for me.

Just the same I would like to see a comprehensive list with accurate data for comparison, more out of curiosity than anything else in truth.

The first thing to ask when seeing data from a mod test is how was the data collated and using what. There are only a very small hand full of sound testing devices with very special mics that can read the absolute peak of sound of a rifle shot as it happens sooooooo very fast. There is an accepted standard way of setting up the machine and mic, to collate said data. The environment in which it is collected also makes a hell of a difference, as does ambient temp, humidity, rain, fog, snow etc. Like I said there is an accepted standard way to do things but as yet no industry standard, which means people can play around with figures all day long till they are getting what suits them if that's there game.
