.philmypower.
Well as I'm sure alot on here know, not had much success on the pike my last few visits. Thought we'd try our luck yesterday and managed 3 in total. Only 2 on video thanks to my mate's language. Not monsters I know but I'm still buzzin. The first one fell to a whole marcel popped off the bottom, the second to a perch lure.
Cranfield
Nice clean fish. I fished the small lake there in Summer about 20 years or more ago and had some good sport on surface lures, no big fish, but all fighters. I was told that there were bigger fish in Llyn Aled, but that was all a long time ago.

fenboy
I see your giving my big bait tip a try !. You might not like my next tip though, please don't fish for pike in the summer it really can do them a great deal of harm. The popularity of summer lure fishing is one of the two main reasons for our dwindling pike stocks. If you would like a couple of days guided fishing in the fens from Oct onwards drop me a PM and I will be happy to take you out despite things not being as good as they once were double figure fish are still fairly common with a half chance of a lump with a bit of luck. Cranfield
I haven't fished for pike for almost 20 years, but as I understand it the theory has always been that as water temperatures rise and oxygen levels fall, the pike becomes very delicate. Obviously, if such a fish wasn't handled correctly, then it would likely die. By the winter these fish will have spawned and be in better condition. As they normally spawn in early Spring, I have always been surprised that pike anglers deliberately target them in February and March, hoping to get a large female full of spawn. karpman
An unhooking mat wouldn't go a miss either, used to pike fish a bit in the summer using lures. There very delicate fish and should be treated with the upmost care. Carp on the other hand..... Karpman Edit forgot to say, unhooking em in the water is ideal especially when you get good at it. Nothing worse than having to wreck you net or get a treble in the finger when ones flying. Edited July 7, 2013 by karpman
beeredup
the special lure mess nets are god as the hooks dont snag them, yeah the PAC website would give you a good list of sensible items to have handy for unhooking and always be prepared for the potential size of Pike your could catch as their not all tiddlers so a decent sized mat and long handled curved forceps help as would some long handled wire cutters too

beeredup
there are people who fish for Pike in the summer but they tend to look for deep water venues where water temps are lower all year round but i prefer not to bother with them this time of year as theres lots of good fun fish to enjoy in the summer trout, salmon, chub etc

mereside
hi phil ,good vid I do alot of pike fishing the reason for not fishing in summer months is a pike fights hard and uses all oxygen and energy so needs a long time to recover and summer months the water is low on oxygen. pike although look tough are very delicate creatures. after getting them safely back to the water get in and hold onto the pike and move it gently so it takes on oxygen ,keep hold of the pike till it wants to go back with strength because if they go back too early they go to the bottom and can go belly up. forgive me if this was covered as i have been off on holiday. a good matt and a large net with a long pair of fawsips are needed just in case of deep hook but if you leave the bail arm off and clip the line and use a free running lead to strike on the run you wont deep hook ,never leave it run for a bit as it will deep hook . pike are very smart the bigger fish do not like resistance on the line and will drop the bait hope this has helped abit . if you need any tips on rigging or anything else give us a pm ,atb wayne
.philmypower.
Thanks mereside, a lot clearer now. Thanks for taking the time to explain. What rigs do you use? I've been using 2x trebles on a wire trace with the bait popped up a ft or so.
mereside
I use my own traces made from easy twist wire and crimped two trebles I usually fish three rods one popped up with the red pop balls and one on the bottom the other i usually have floating about. lamprey, smelt and mackrel if you ever come my way give us a shout there is some nice 30's around me the last is a really bad picture of a 30 but only had my phone and i was on my own , it got caught a month later and went 30.2oz and the markings varified as the same one ,the second to come out of that water so was very pleased, good luck with your big girls in the colder months you will hit them, atb wayne
