Holland&Holland
Last monday i was om my last driven hunt for wild boar, roe and red deer in Hessen (Germany). It was raining hard and we had very heavy winds. I only saw a couple of roedeer running past, could not get a shot on them. Saw also a lot of dogs go past, they were barking a lot (a tell tale that they are on to something) but no wild boar. Well you can't have it all, and at the end of the day i was very wet. Mate of mine shot a big male boar. Others some roe or piglets. Had great time anyways. Hopefully in future i can show you some more nice pictures of wild boar. For now these are probably the last for this year, or i might get lucky in the Netherlands. So what's on the pictures? At the end of the hunt all the game is presented / laid out at these branches and then they blow on their horns to salute the game and end the hunt. Every animal has its own tune. If you shot a specific animal you are presented with a small token (branch) to put on youre hat. It's a nice ritual to honour the killed animal and the hunter. Dunkield
Great pictures and words as always H&H I was expecting some of the traditions in Croatia but at the end of each day, the head beater said some nice words and we all took our hats off as a mark of respect, and then we got drunk

gibby
Always love to see these pictures. Just a couple of questions, when you say they are driven, are they moving when you shoot them? also whats the shot to kill ratio? Regards Gibby

Holland&Holland
@ gibby The roe and red deer have to be shot standing still. You can give roe a whistle, red deer you'll have to hope they stop to have a look round. The wild boar can be shot on the run. With driven hunt i mean that several people with dogs walk round in the wood and make some noise. They do NOT walk in a line and make loads of noise. By disturbing the game in a more "gentle" way the game comes by trotting, mostly not running. So you can have a good shot on them. For roe en red deer it's almost 1 shot 1 kill because they are standing still while shot. (in general shots missed are mostly because of shooting fever ) For wild boar it is about 1 to 3 shots 1 kill. ( so i mean 1 to 2 misses for every good shot). Foxes and raccoons can also be shot on the run. They are about 1 to 3 shots 1 kill as well. All depends on shooting conditions really and experience of the hunter. By the way, these ratio's do not mean you will have the change to shoot 3 times at the same animal. If they come by you will have to be quick in aiming and shooting. Sometimes you will hit a tree because youre shooting in the woods and when youre moving the gun along with the animal and pull the trigger a tree can be in youre way. Or just a big miss . Sometimes the space you will have to shoot between is not more then 6 meters. But of course you will only fire if you think you will have a lethal shot. We are not cowboys and shoot at every glimpse of game. Hope this clarifies things a bit...

Holland&Holland
Thanks Konings for the kind words, hope to see you in top shape soon. @ Blaser: I myself shoot a .308W, but everything from more then .243 and up is used. Most common is 7x64,.308W or 30.06 Mate of mine shoots a 9,3x74R but thats a bit too oomp for me. With smaller game it doesn't give the shockpunch, just goes trough the body. With big boar and red deer it's OK.
