fenboy
Starting to stock up on some cartridges for the coming season, I know the remington loads are fairly well regarded had a choice between the Hi speed steel or Nitro steel Whats the difference the Hi speed were £5 a box cheaper (£22) and labeled 1550fps the Nitro steel were £27 but only 1400 fps , so what would be the advantage of the Nitro Steel Being a tight wad I went for the cheapest. ayano3
Hi Fenboy, the difference is the Nitro Steel shot is coated in something that is supposed to make it throw better patterns (allegedly) but I use the sportsman steel and get on fine with it. I am a great believer that if you get used to using a certain cartridge and stick to it its better than chopping and changing. If you put the shot in the right place and get to know its limits then you will be fine with your chosen load. I must be a tight wad too. You will need at least 10 cartridges this season, no more than 12, so you wont be skint and will have enough loose change for the breakfasts !! Are you sure? I've just checked some boxes in the cupboard (Nitro and Sportsman) and the quoted velocities are the same 1550fps.They are both 1 3/8oz American 2. I've killed decent range pinks with both, but probably slighly prefer the nitro. Did Cecil not have any Eley lightning?

I got them from Partridge guns, he had no lightning but said he should be getting some. I am 100% sure on the stated velocity of the Hi speed steel being higher than the nitro, as it was clearly displayed on the boxes, though the exact figure may be wrong < I am pretty sure the nitro steel was something like 100 -150 fps slower , which will make little difference in real terms. fenboy
I brought these for geese should I get a chance at one, what shot size would you choose for a all round duck load in steel and would you use a lighter load in say a 3" or 2 3/4 case ?? I've just looked on the remington website, and they state a load of different speeds for different shot sizes and loads in all the cartridge lengths but the 1 3/8 oz in 3 1/2 case are both 1550fps. See here for the rest of them Sportsman hi speed Nitro steel
fenboy
Thanks , looks like I may have compared the hi speed 3 1/2 inch against the 3 inch nitro which is 100fps less.
