Going to USA with S1/S2 firearms

Recommended Posts

Evening all

Has anyone here ever taken their guns over to the USA, I know I have to of either purchased a license for hunting small game/deer or to of been invited to a shooting event when filling in the ATF's form

As my uncles got 4 acres of land and his neighbours have got more looking to go over next august to hunt and do some target shooting over there, can you bring back like scopes, stocks or chokes and put them

in checked baggage

Ive heard different accounts of what you can and cant bring back guns obviously being one of them not allowed, what about shotgun cartridges/bullets? is it only through rfd's that these can

be brought in by bulk. was just wanting to bring back some usa clay/hunting shells to give em a try like.

Scopes over 4x magnification are ITAR restricted along with many other things, the yanks get very jumpy about shooting stuff leaving the states & getting into the hands of terrorists which is a bit rich considering the amount of arms they sent over to the "freedom fighting" Taliban to overthrow their Russian oppressors :hmm:

No they aren't.

Only scopes that are covered by ITAR are those with dedicated military usage or military enhancements like electronic image enhancement, nightvision etc. The 4x limit is for scopes being exported from the UK.

Without an export licence or non-resident alien permit you won't be able to bring back ammunition or firearms, this can take months to aqquire.

I regulary bring back reloading components (118Kg one trip!), presses, cases, bullets etc. but you can't bring powder or primers. 12g carts are cheaper over here from the one's I've seen over there.

DO NOT put scopes in checked baggage, take a backpack or larger carry on bag and put it/them in there (this is direct advice from the TSA)

To buy firearms you have to be resident for 90days or have a non-resident alien visa which you won't get unless you're going over to work for a while. You can buy used firearms at gun shows but the ATF are tightening up and you'd still need an export licencse to be able to take it out of the US. For your own rifles/shotguns etc. fill in the ATF form for temporary importation, include ammunition you're taking and you should be able to return with the same amounts.

Have a look at http://www.4scopes.com/ I got my Sightron SIII 8-32x56 for over £300 less than they are here but remember you're only allowed £390 worth of duty free goods (plus perfume, spirits, cigarettes etc.) coming back :)

Please be aware that if your taking a rifle with a moderator the ATF may not be very happy as in a lot of states they are a licensed item (Federal Tax Stamp), make sure you declare everything firearm related you're taking with you, magazines with more than a 10 round limit also have restrictions in a lot of states.

The M&P 1522 is an excellent bit of kit :) It's no longer full mill-spec so changing major parts is difficult, the early ones were to spec but they changed things like the locking pin positions and buffer tube size to stop people putting different uppers etc. on them.

Bass Pro is OK, a lot of stuff is overpriced compared to the online stores like Brownells/Sinclairs of Midway USA, Cabellas retail stores are the same but a bit cheaper, of course most stuff is still cheaper than here!. 12g carts were around the same price from what I remember, in fact the Hull Comp-X and Eley Firsts I recently bought here were a lot cheaper than US carts.

ah right wont be buying any firearms, heard its 5kg limit for airline ammo limit think i might just buy some whilst im there

they certainly have some good scopes on that site, is that like new york/california laws just going to bring a rimfire and centrefire besides my 2 x 12g

have you ever done any hunting over there?. my uncles apparently small garden(the locals consider 4 acres small  ) just backs onto forest with turkeys and deer roaming about.

but apparently now have mountain lions in the area :| .

It looks it :good: what groupings do you get at 25/50 yds?, so they now made most of it only accept theirs seen on sgc website and others a moe edition with magpul stuff on it

that looks good.

so to shop around then I will do my uncles local gunstore will be first port of call for bullets/carts hopefully this panic buying will be over by then.tell you what I was impressed by on last

visit over my cousin in usa mil. took his .22 remmy out and he could hit target 100yds dead on where he said he was going for zombie target right between the eyes

I'm not sure how the ammo thing works for taking your own/bringing it back but for just buying ammo you still need an export license to get it back.

The 1522 easily groups under an inch at 25m, mine is the standard version not the performance centre one. Yes you can get all sorts of stick-on bits for them, the fore-end quad rail is standard spec with Picatinny rails so anything will fit.

You can even get a slide fire stock to turn it "fully auto" (well near enough!) but you'd need a drum mag to keep it fed :)

Not done any hunting at all, target shot 50cal at 1000m (and missed quite a lot!) and showed my son how it used to be when I had a S&W 29 6" (.44mag) revolver and the Beretta 92F 9mm, he likes shooting the Glock 17 but I prefer the Sig 220 :D

There's not a lot of reloading components about, bullets in the more popular calibres, .308 .223 etc. are sold out most everywhere.

seen them vids of those slide fires anyone over here got one you know of? and plenty off .22lr to keep it going

dont know wether the club im at would like that on the range prob. get a few wanting a go though

sayy whatt lol that must of been an experience then :good: , yet to do 1000m shot most ive done is 150-200yds back stateside bet the ammo for the .50 is cheaper over there

pre ban days my dad gave me uk guns review 86-87 magazines other week all just different era, never shot centrefire/sec5 handguns yet looking to have a go next yr

the kick off that .44mag must of been heavy want to fire both those handguns glock and the sig.

This post takes me back.

In the pre-handgun ban days a group of us went out to florida as guests of the Kissimmee Police Dept

BA had confirmed that they would carry our handguns and all we had to do was put them in our main luggage (even then, not allowed in the cabin) declare them when we got to check-out and show our FAC's.

On arrival the check-in clerk asked us to confirm that we had applied the orange id tags to each gun....

What orange id tags? No-one had mentioned these at all before and we hadn't been sent any with our tickets

These would apparently show up on x-ray to confirm that the guns had been declared.

She kindly handed some over and I will NEVER forget the looks on the faces of the other passengers in the queue as these " nutters " with whom they would shortly be travelling, knelt on the floor extracting all sorts of weapons from their suitcases

Believe it or not, none of that group ( most of whom are still with us) ever went on to shoot anybody or use one of their firearms in any illegal way whatsoever!
