njc110381
This is a subject that I've never approached before. What's the score with them? Are they supposed to reduce barrel wear? Shoot faster? Or is it a bit of a gimmick?
rem708
Molybdenum Disulfide is without doubt a good lubricant so in theory should make the bullets more slippery in the barrel. However, looking at the amount on the surface it would take a lot of rounds to coat the barrel to some degree. Moly does penetrate steel as I found out many years ago when rebuilding engines. The local machine shop (lotus specialists) did not like cranks which had been impregnated ( I don’t know why) Moly coating has been around a while now and yet I have not seen any definitive tests to show it makes any difference. There is lots of opinions and comments that it makes barrels last longer but how can you verify this without a controlled test. I think the rule would be if you start using them then - stick to them. Vince Green
It was a fad really about 15 years ago, suddenly it was everywhere you looked in all the magazines, but it never came up to speed. Its not more accurate, it doesn't reduce bore wear because hot gasses do the damage. The serious target shooters went with it for a while but soon dropped it. njc110381
I was thinking just that re the bore wear. I always thought they got burnt out rather than worn. It seems this moly stuff is best avoided. Point noted!
shoot57
Steer clear of them there is no need to use them and they leave the barrel very dirty, a friend of mine used them and decided he didn't like them and it took him an age to get the barrel clean, but i agree with rem708 stay with them once you have used them Edited August 3, 2013 by shoot57
Grandalf
Have used Moly bullets for years in my 22/250. Extremely accurate. Never had a problem with them. Barrel gets cleaned once in a while and always if it gets wet. Comes up nice and shiny every time. Put about 250 through the tube at the PW Rifle Shoot at Catton Park. I think all this downside that you hear about them is myth.
