Damage to a roe buck.

Whilst sitting up in a field entrance yesterday watching flight lines before setting up for a decoying session I noticed through the binoculars a roe buck heading towards me across the chosen field.

He was a fine specimen, one that I have seen before, but this time there was something different about him. By the time he got to within 100m I could see what it was. He was shaking his head constantly and I could see quite clearly that one of his antlers was missing. When he got even closer I could see blood where the antler should have been and also a lot of flies bothering him.

He may get through this set back but I can hardly bear to think what might happen if blow fly eggs are laid in the open wound.
