Longy0710
Guys After some help. After a good 18 months of training I now have 2 dogs which are ready for the shooting field with another in training as we speak (both have had experience on game back end of last season). The problem I am having is getting the work for them this season. I have a small syndicate I can pick up on that shoot 10-20 birds a day which is once a month. Ideally I would like my dogs to be out 1-2 days a week through the season picking up. I am not really bothered about payment for the work as I just enjoy working my dogs and the day as a whole. As I work Mon-Fri Saturdays are preferred but I would be able to put holidays in to allow me to work the odd day during the week. How do I go about getting some more work for my dogs? Is it a case of who you know or is there anyone on here who is within an hour of Sheffield who is looking for a keen hard working picker up? Hope you guys can help Longy

scotslad
It's really all down to who u know and word off mouth, u will probably find once u get ur foot in the door u will end up with loads. Would imagine a lot off shooting in the sheffileld area. Do u do any tests with local gundog clubs/training classes possibly some folk there could have some contacts. No one in ur syndicate has any contacts outside of it? Finally u could try door knocking if u can find some local keepers. Althou some kepers might expect u to do ur time in the beating line first althou that was a more old fashioned way off doing it. 1 word off caution pcking up is generally the quickest way to ruin a trained dog if ur not careful, esp if u've got 2 young dogs. Picking a lot off runners or swepping in deep cover esp if raking a long way from u are not good for a young dog but sometimes need to be done
Longy0710
Thanks Scotslad. I will be having a run to a couple of shoots I know in the coming weeks to try and find the keeper. I dont run tests locally and MAY have an invite to another shoot through a syndicate member. Will keep trying!!
PERCE
Had you considered that you may have to do some beating to get a foot in the door? An awful lot of picking up revolves around 'dead mans shoes'
Longy0710
Yes perce I realise that I may have to have a season beating in order to gain some picking up work. ill see what I can turn up through my shooting buddies and may have to bash some brambles in the meantime.....
