HW682
cartridges containing five or more shot, none of which exceeds ·36 inch in diameter; I think this might answer the first part of your question? ( from http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1968/27/body ) I'm not sure if the second part means you are thinking of emptying a pigeon cartridge and reloading it with larger shot? henry d
No it is not safe if you are going to cut open a cartridge and put in larger shot, do NOT mess with cartridges if you wish to keep yourself and your limbs on this planet. Kes
The most important question is - how close is the fox ? A 28 gram cart will kill a fox through a full choke at less than 10 yds, and correctly placed. However for reasons of wishing to be as humane as possible, unable to predict where a fox will appear and at what range, we all 'tool-up' for foxes. There is often a temptation e.g. for some guns on game shoots, to try a 30 gram 6 at 30 yds, which is entirely inappropriate, inhumane and stupid. Use minimum BB at less than 30 yds and a 3" cart. If you cant manage this and the price of a box of carts is more important, get someone else to do it.

You are going to be playing about with the pressures etc which might not be suitable for your gun and could end up having a very nasty accident! Buy a box of AlphaMax (Or similar) in BBs - Would you really want to take a gamble with your life over the price of a box of cartridges? superspark
You can buy a box of 10 instead of 25 if you look around. That's 3" magnums with correct shot size and you will have a few spares for the future
