Two hours of heaven.....

I had the whole Sunday planned as a shooting day. The weather was a little hot and the wind a little too gentle but it was my day for shooting.... well it was.... until a little incident at the stables meant I had to be in attendance so I only had from 9am to 12:00 to shoot....

Took along my new Magnet to see how that faired and all my nets so I could experiment.

Set-up with my back to the hedge with the wind coming from my left. The magnet was 15 yards out at the head of my coma pattern with two plastic decoys on it and accompanied by five full bodied shells and 12 FUDs. I have two nets up and I sat and weighted. within about a minute bird number one flew straight into the kill zone and was dead with one shot. Then nothing.... ok it was hot and low wind and little in the air but I waited. I was at a cross section of flight lines so eventually some come into the area but were not interested. After a hour I took down the magnet and moved the decoys a little as the wind had changed to be more in my face and waited. About 20+ birds came in, in pairs and small groups and I bagged about five. The trouble was I was not seeing them coming in... took one net down and it was like sitting in front of a wide screen TV - I felt so exposed but in fact I was not. More came in and but I was shooting over the top and missed eight easy shots..... I mean I saw them come in, I saw them glide down and I missed. Then one as it rocketed across the hide - single shot and down it went.......

Lessons learnt:

1. I have to see out more or I just miss silly opportunities

2. I need to follow through and relax - don't over think things just kill the b*ggers

3. Need to try the Magnet again before we right it off to make sure as those that did come in where a lot closer and slower on approach.

4. I need to get out and shoot more and I need the practise and clays just taste horrible

5. Even two hours of frustrated shooting is two hours in heaven....

Next session will not be until next sunday as I have the kids for the week and my mother with us. I am also helping David with the harvest so if it does stay dry then I will be back in the combine.

Seven Woodies and one feral.

Motty - I have not given up on the Magnet far from it and I have another venture planned for next Sunday when I will be out all day. My point about the netting was I was using too much so I could not be seen but also could not see. I often stand up to see the flight lines and how active they are but when seated with active flight lines I was not seeing them come in. It was a good two hours and it was a shame I had to leave as it was just getting fun... but such is life. :-)

Reaction shooting is great ie the birds coming from behind you . It's frustrating that if you do not see them in time and you tend to follow and cannot catch them up. The same can be said about slow low birds coming in front they can take it seems ages to reach the kill zone and you tend to line the gun up for ages and miss. It's best to leave it till they are in the kill zone and Move ,Mount and Shoot. Well done on your day . The magnet will bring you bonus birds in its time, personally I think this time of year with all the " Cherry Picker Shooters" out with magnets or twin magnets they see too many magnets and I leave mine in the bag. When they come into there own is when you have multiple flight lines on a field and the movement attracts them to your pattern.
