CaptC
A picture or two might help? Not being picky but shouldn't it be early 20th century as it would be a flint/percussion if its 19th century? fallowbuck
The centrefire cartridge was patented about 1866,so he would be correct in stating 19th century.
CaptC
Not wishing to be pedantic but "early 19th century" would be 1800 - 1830 'ish pre any cartridges? Joseph Lang took over Joe Manton's stock and shop around then and went on to produce some superb guns himself - and the invention of one of the first detachable locks known as the key lock when a small key was inserted into the lock face (on a sidelock) to unlock and remove the locks. Some say that his son James was a better gunmaker - his Imperial being his "best" gun.
Kes
I agree we are talking late nineteenth/early 20th century for true sidelock patents. I have an early 20th H&H. Nevertheless a really good gun - a friend of mine has one and it looks the business and it shoots rather well !
CaptC
Mr Lang built his best guns (IMO) from the late 19th to just before the first world war. After the slaughter of the cream of of the countries youth demand for "best" guns diminished as it did again after WW2. The best English gunmakers struggled through the post war years and during the late 60's and 70's London gunmakers were making their guns and selling them for a loss - hence the quality of the guns of that era. Slightly off topic but interesting!
