BRNDL
So, your looking for a stamp on your gun with the Fleur de Lys. It is a crown symbol on your barrels. With out this your barrels are not proofed for steel shot. That is not to say some guns don't shoot steel through non proofed barrels, dependent on choke but I cant help with this unfortunately. Shot wise your looking around the No3 mark for high performance steel shot for geese and around number 4s for duck. WelshAndy
A friend has a Winchester Parker hale choked at quater and half, we were shooting ducks on Monday and he was using eley bismuth and killed cleanly with them. Since then he has found out that he can put standard steel through it too. Happy fowling Edited September 5, 2013 by WelshAndy

BRNDL
So you can put standard steel through any barrel and at any choke as long as the barrels are not damascus.
Fiddich
aw brilliant!! whats the max increase in shot size mean??
silver pigeon 3
aw brilliant!! whats the max increase in shot size mean?? It means that whatever size in lead you would use you go up 2 sizes in steel. This is because steel is lighter than lead and requires a larger pellet to be effective, so for ducks a steel 4 is as small as you want to go as long as you keep the range sensible. If i were you and was going to use a non HP steel proofed gun i would be getting a box of these in shot size 4 http://www.gamebore.com/products/33/12g-game-wetland-steel Edited September 5, 2013 by silver pigeon

I don't care what BASC put in there magazine - they got this wrong
kent
Lot of rubbish spoken about steel no.3 aint a proper goose size in steel, yes I take a few with them every year BUT its very limited! You want the biggest shot size that will work in your own gun driven as fast as it can be. BASC advice is of limited use on steel shot, bit dated and erring on the over cautious imo Steel is the way forwards but standards need to change on speeds, it can be driven way, way faster with the latest componants at less pressure. Although I haven't tried the stuff Eley are now pushing change with their lightning brand. 1700 fps is possible and you don't need all the heavy weight loads that try to mimic lead load weights.
