Early widgeon

Hi all...we seemed blessed in North Wales with numerous early widgeon, however yesterday morning the first real big packs put in a very early show with upwards of 500 in several large packs at morning flight.

Looking at my diary over the last 3 years the earliest seen was the 28th September in these numbers-can only assume the recent Northerly winds we had have driven them in early?any other areas showing any numbers?

Incidently a first for me in over 40 years was a treble..only had a semi this last 3 years(hatson escort) and very impressed with it as a fowling gun.

Looking forward to adding to my tally of 10 duck and a Canada thus far this season.

The most widgeon I've seen on the upper Severn this early for some years. A week before the season the wetlands trust had a count of 100 in. Putting one in the bag aint an easy task at the mo. I thought the fact there's a lack of water about the country was the reason to why we got a few early birds in hear as last season there was a fair bit of flood water about but the widgeon were scarce.

It was rare not to shoot wigeon on the first on the marshes I shot in North Wales, usually had big numbers by the end of September then they would dwindle down to much smaller numbers by November and then stick to few 100 for the rest of the season.

Always a good start and generally a poor end.

Its normal to see fair numbers in N Norfolk from late August ( I saw a flock on 58 on a freshwater pool next to the sea wall on August 25th this year). On several opening days the first duck of the season has been a wigeon. By the third week in September we can have several thousand on the coastal marshes I shoot. Peaking in late October\early November and then numbers decline until they become quite scarce by late December unless we get some cold weather. 90% or my coastal, wigeon are shot before the end of November most years.

They seem to be coming in early these days to the fresh marshes on the Broads as well. At one time we rarely shot any before the weather turned cold in mid November , but last year I shot my first wigeon in late September last season and October was a very good month for them. However they linger on the fresh marshes throught the season provided we have some flood water .
