WelshAndy
In me experience its a lot easier to call ducks than geese, I bought a cheap unbranded duck call off ebay for a fiver about 4 seasons ago and called loads of duck with it. As for goose calls I'd say the older long reed calls like an olt 800 or dj Illinois wooden calls wood be good for a beginner (my 7 year old lad uses one) if you can learn how to use a short reed call then it gives you more of a range of sounds - more realistic I have one for sale if your interested http://forums.pigeonwatch.co.uk/forums/topic/259583-short-reed-canada-goose-call/

WelshAndy
Short reed calls are more difficult to learn but once you've got the basics it gets easier. Loads of videos on YouTube

Penelope
As WelshAndy says, long reed goose calls are easier to learn on and the OLt 800 type now produce by Dave Jackson of Illinois Calls. For the mallard call, my favourite is a 25 year old Olt 'Sonderman 66' single reed call, which I believe is also available from Illinois Calls. It might not have the top end volume, but is perfect for come back, quacks and chatter. henry d
Feed calls are better with a proper call as you can mix the calls as well, it is also very easy as the call is just rapid "Ticket....ticket ..ticket" through the call.
