Could someone clarify the sliding stock situation on pumps and semi's as i thought the measurement had to be made at it's shortest setting in order to get the 40 inches overall length ,(most sliding stocks won't reach 40 inches overall length in there shortest setting) however i have heard that this has been changed lately so not sure what the rule is .

If it is not a semi or a pump then there is no overall length limit as long as the barrel is greater than 24" in length it falls under the legal definition of a shotgun section 2 .

That don't sound correct to me matey!

As far as I am aware there is no distinction between the overall lengths of different action types!

There was a mass debate about this overall length of a shotgun with a sliding/collapsible stock a while back as I fitted one in my wingmaster. I took it off in the end as I rang my FEO and he said that if it had one in the gun you would have to disregard one been fitted so it would be measured from the muzzle to the beginning of the receiver , that made it too short .

However another police force did mention something along the lines of a section 1 shotgun being used for PSG shooting would be allowed ???

There was not a restriction on the overall length of a shotgun until the Hungerford shooting , Together with the ban on semi and pump centre fire rifles they also sneaked in to section 5 semi or pump action shotguns with a overall length of less than 40" or a barrel of less than 24".

Everything else single shot /ou/sxs/boltaction/lever action etc only needs to have a barrel of 24" to be a section 2 shotgun .

If the barrel is less than 24" it is not then a section 2 shotgun but becomes a section 1 firearm which then must have an overall length greater than 600mm and a minimum barrel length of 300mm, anything less than this is defined as a small firearm and banned from general possession under section 5 of the firearm's act.

Wow,lots of info here. So when they say barrel length, is that 24 inch limit from the end of the chamber? Or do they mean the whole lot? Am thinking of playing around with dimensions of a beat up old single barrel shotgun. Can I have it with just a pistol grip? Just want to see how far I could go with the modifications really. Would never dream of butchering a decent gun......this thing is gonna cost me £10, just doing it for fun.

Thanks for all your help.

So.....call me a dummy thats fine but just to be sure.....I can on a section 2 shotgun cert legally use a single barreled 12g shotgun and semi pistol grip the stock so the overal would be way under 40"?

U :)

Not sure what a semi-auto pistol grip is, but if you just mean something like this;

Then yes you can put one on any action shotgun which ISN'T a pump or semi providing the barrel is at least 24" on a Shotgun Certificate.
