Boat fishing out of Mersea Island

Well, had a great day today on board the Enterprise skippered by Chris Moles, all thanks to Martin Cavie.

Got up at 5.30am and drove the 40 mins down the A12 to meet up with Martin and two of his mates for a days Cod and Whiting fishing. Weather was excellent first thing at 7.15am with a slight chilling breeze and overcast skys rippling the water as we boarded at "The Hard".

Anybody who has been with Chris will know that he is one of the friendliest skippers around and helps everybody equally as much whether they be novices or old hands at boat fishing. This was evident this morning when Martin and I met two guys in the carpark, who had booked a days fishing on board another boat out of Mersea and the skipper didn't turn up telling them he hadn't got it booked in his diaries. Straight away Chris asked us whether we would mind the guys coming on board.

"No probs" was the answer all round and once these guys were safely stowed onboard we roared out of the river and out to sea. We very quickly got to our mark and straight away people were getting bites all over the place on Squid, Squid/Lug Pennell rigs. Several Roker (Thornback Ray) and small whiting and codling came aboard. This carried on until about 12.30 where by Chris thought we might stand a better chance of getting larger cod closer to shore on the shallows as the tide was satarting to run hard and the wind and waves picked up.

No sooner had we anchored up, we started catching again, but this time Pouting and even smaller whiting. after an hour of being buffeted about and freezing in this new wind, we decided to up anchor again and go back to where we had started off. Things were abit quiter, but the bites we had produced bigger stamp of codling to just over 4lb and several whiting to 1.5lb, a couple of Roker as well.

We ended the day with approx 14 Thornbacks the biggest pushing 8lb, 10 good sized cod with several small ones thrown back, at least ten Whiting, although only 4-5 were keepers, Pouting and one Dogfish and one Dab between the six of us. Chris provided Tea and Coffee throughout the day to keep us warm and as usual on these days the banter flowed extremely well.

So thanks goes to Martin and his mates for inviting me and Chris for providing us with great sport, especially as I had never had a Roker before, but ended up with Three, two of which are now sitting in my fridge for tomorrows tea. Cheers guys I had a great day. :good::lol:

And the cod and chips I had for tea last night were superb.

I will have the skate in a few days time, the rest of the cod and whiting were distributed among family to keep me in their good books.

It was an excellent day and it is a real shame I lost the last fish of the day as it had the feel of being a good one.
