fruity
Afternoon all Question as above is it ok to mix a/t tyres on a 4x4 Meaning a different pair on the back compared to the front pair , same size but just a different tread pattern on the back , just that the lad at the garage claims they should be changed as a set it 4 Thanks Edited October 20, 2013 by fruity
jimboblincs2
I believe this depends on the car. Modern 4x4's with electronic diff controls don't like different rolling radius tyres as it cocks the electronics up, convincing them there is wheel spin when there is none. Hence change all 4 together, I have run different profile tyres on my disco with no apparent ill effects. Jim

Chris Bb
If they're the same size the tread pattern should make no difference. I think the "lad at the garage" just wants to sell two more tyres!
StuC
I think the "lad at the garage" just wants to sell two more tyres! Or doesn't want a blown diff due to his advice. What Jim says, but general advice is to change all four at the same time and rotate through the life to ensure equal wear.
110csw
On my old disco I had allsorts on it with varying tread patterns and tread depth to no ill effect to the drive train. I do prefer to have 4 of the same on tho but pennies don't always allow me too lol
stubby
tried to replace just two on my freelander, drove like a pig, next day two more of the same fitted, drove like a new car
matone
It will matter on any old style 4wd without a centre diff. With 4wd engaged one axle will be trying to beat the other !
Fib new
If you have a transfer box without a vcu this should be ok. With a vcu this will **** up your viscous coupling unit. A defender-like transfer box will give you no probs if you don't overdo it. Same size and different make will be no problem.
