Magnet

Hi everyone, I hope I am posting in the right section and also that this isn't a repost but i was wandering if anyone had made their own magnet? If so, how hard/expensive was it to build. I can probably get hold of the window wiper motor for free.

Thanks :/

I will have to take a look at another of my friends magnets and see what we can build, i'l keep you posted.

I suppose it depends on how handy you are with light fabrication......one can be knocked up with relative ease using a windscrene wiper motor for a scrap yard......but as kirky says.........they are cheap enough to buy on ebay....and is it really worth the hastle?

agree totaly with paul you could make one but getting the sprung steel for the arms at the rite angles etc is not that easy

as i have a friend who has made one and now has bought one from me which i sold on at no extra cost onestly :/

How did you do that? :good:

The photo I mean

Hope this works

Made these two in my lunch breaks at work. The first one has fixed angled arms made from small bore steel tube. The second one has sprung steel arms which are adjustable in height, one up and one down, the sprung steel is great in the breeze. Easy for me to make as I have access to the tools and the materials. Not really worth the time and effort really as there cheap enough to buy new now as the boys above say

It worked,   :yp: good man Johnno :good:

They look absolutely spot on mate. What motor have you used, a window wiper motor or an electric window motor as I have seen that the electric window motors use alot less power and last longer on the battery?

Anyways like i say, they are very good. I think I am going to have a bash at making one though, Its all about the satisfation of seeing something you have made successfully working, Its not all about the cost

EDIT: sorry, I have just noticed that they are window wiper motors, couldn't see them at 1st!!

making a pigeon magnet is quiet easy the biggest task iss to keep it light in weight

8mm steel bar for the arms(max 1.2mtrs long) and croc clips for the wing holders

box extensions for longer arms ,i am using 1.7mtr arms each arm gives you a span of 3.4mtrs 10 ft

car windscreen wiper motor for the drive /make a plate that can be welded to the end of the original arm with the theeth in gives extra strength.

these motors do have a tendancy to break the shafts so get a spare or 2

the only other item i would say is a must is a speed controller there is a link below that will show you a kit for around a £10

speed controller kits

good luck

take some piccies and show us what you create and the huge bag of poggies :good:

Good grief how amny more times are we gonna have this come up :P Bite the bullet and go buy one from the site sponsors and stop being so stingy! :good:

I'm not being stingy atall. I get more satisfaction out of doing something myself and being successful because of it. I just wouldn't mind trying to make one thats all so in my case its got nothing to do with being stingy. i earn more than enough money (although i am spent up this month) to get a magnet thanks.

Oh and thanks Colin.Y :P

the point in making your own is like the craft of all other shooting skills ,it is the achivement of making somthing that helps you shoot more birds.I have made loads of gear for pigeon shooting from magnets to sprung craddles and flappers ,i could have bought them all but i didn`t because i enjoy using my skills to aquire better shooting . No different than building a hide ,most shooters now adays just go buy a cammo net and hide poles and have a hide i still make mine from whatever is available .This usually ends up being a better hide because it is the same material/colour/texture as the suroundings

You don`t need £100`s of gear to get good bags!!

Here's my magnet motor assembly.

My second attempt because the "windscreen wiper motor" version was not strong enough.

This is a rear motor from a kiddies go cart, and sports a centre axle that stabilises the weight

of heavy pigeons. No downwards weight is on the motor at all, bearings help there.

It is easier to buy these things, but I also like the challenge, and it gives me something to do.

hey nick ,

that is the common problem with windymotors they do tend to break .I have made 4 now and all still ok ,but the one my mate bought which is what i coppied has broken twice and now will have a new motor fitted ,i think the trick is what you have done or belt drive from windy motor or chain/gears.With the ones i have made i used the bottom piece of arm from windy wipers and welded a flat plate below this so force is as low as possible this does seam to work at the moment

Hi Colin,

Mine was brilliant when I used decoys on it. As soon as I had drawn two woodies in I replaced the decoys with the woodies. As it was, the weight was too much and it ended up a right mess.

The above motor is free floating, and has to be " wedged " to stop the whole thing rotating. The arms are sandwiched between two bearings, the whole axle being 12mm threaded bar, and can take a lot of weight and side movement.

The motor has a nylon gearbox at 33:1 but is isolated from the weight of the arms by the bearings. A square metal box slots over the top of the plastic rotor bit.

The speed controller is mounted underneath, motor running at 6V, battery is 12v.

Overall, it is a better design than the last one, and I haven't even had time to use it yet. I have run it in the garden, but thats all.

Regards

Nick
