Brown Sauce
Well what a day out we had!! Arranged for us all to meet at 1.30am in a lay-by outside Brecon (dodgy I know) and as we pull up, the first of our group is having a nice chat with the local plod! All is well and we set off on our travels to Welshpool in a convoy of three cars, with our white van leading the way, followed by two 4x4. Not sure why, but the combination of white van and 4x4's get us stopped again by plod, guess they thought we'd been on a shopping trip in the wee small hours!! Finally arrive at our destination for 5.00am to meet our host Sheldon for the days shooting, quick chat and then off in the cars to our field for the morning. Sheldon had been doing some really excellent leg work finding us a field of maize, which had only been cut the week before and the previous day had been covered in well over 200 geese. So we set up the hides, put out the decoys and then the waiting game begins! 6.30am its getting lighter and the crows are awake making a racket, but no geese, 7.00am slightly lighter, ducks are up and about, but no geese!! Could we be in the wrong spot. 7.15am start using the goose call I bought in the summer, honking away and then at 7.30am, the 1st skein of near enough 40 birds arrives, they decoy perfectly into the pattern and we're off. For the next hour we have skeins of 10 to 50 birds at a time coming through and after another hour they drop to 2 n 3's. By 9.30am we call it over, pack up and have a count up. We have 23 canada geese for 69 spent cartridges, which aint a bad average of 3 per bird. Have to say the Gamebore Mammount 42g BB's and No 1's certainly do the job. From left to right Brown Sauce, Gary Greengrass, Pete, Swampy and Carl. Almost forgot the dog Scooby From left to right Fal, Brown Sauce, Gary Greengrass, Pete and Swampy. The evening flight was back down to where the birds had flighted through in the morning, but wind and weather pushed the birds in a different direction and we had a nil bag return. We stayed up for the whole day and had an excellent time being guided by Sheldon around the local countryside. I'd have to say on the whole, that I've had one of the best days out shooting geese ever. Thank you Shotgun Spud, Andrew and Sheldon, see you next season. filzee
Sounds like a great day indeed. A member from here came out a day last week on one of my permissions for a morning decoying. Wasn't the ideal field for it but got a few geese close but neither took a shot. Now i know why you guys do it. Certainly gets the blood pumping. Fal
I'm seriously sleep deprived; I'm like a bear with a sore head this morning! And I had a wakeup call at 5.30am from the dog! Well worth it though, great day out! I'd just like to reiterate what Gary and Charlie have said about Sheldon, we only had a good days sport because he had found the geese for us. If he hadn't it would have just been another blank day after the geese I'm sure! I enjoyed decoying them a lot more than I thought I would. Penelope
I may owe an apology if they were using 3.5 inch cartridges. I've just checked and the 3.5 steel Mammoths have a 42g load. But so do a few 3" lead loads. Getting pop corn time lol Edited November 7, 2013 by Penelope

fallowbuck
Can only use lead on dry land not marsh, bogs etc in Scotland.NOT in England and Wales.(For Wildfowl) Edited November 7, 2013 by fallowbuck

Not the best idea, deciding not to get your head down and staying awake for 38 hours straight. That was one very amusing drive home, well at least we didn't start to hallucinate!! fallowbuck
I have been having good results with Gamebore Super Steel in 32gm 4,s on Duck and Pheasant! I also have some Eley Lightening Super Steell in 36 gm 3,s in case I get a crack at the Geese. They do work at 40 yards or more if your aim is true! Brown Sauce
*******! I will 100% not be going up and back in the same day again, ever! The car journey home was awful! It wasn't that bad, come on, we had a laugh, a few tears and a bit of girly screaming, but nothing that would describe it as awful. Terrible yes, but awful no. One of the lads had some Eley Lightnings in No1's, think they were 38g and they were really doing the trick for a 3" cartridge killing out past 30 yards, excellent. Personally I use 3" 36g Gamebore super steel 1's and 3's for ducks, then switch to 3.5" steel 42g BB's for geese, find that little extra power really helps.
