Dave-G
Cheers mick (Dave) I'll state my reasoning for that advice for fixed mag NVD.s. If you use a visible light for lamping and some of it falls outside the scope view your eyes can see what eye-shine for example it lights up - or what is looking at your light source, and what is maybe scarpering. With a fixed mag night vision rig such as the Photon you cannot see what is looking at your light unless it is in the viewfinder - not even it's eye-shine so it's counter productive to have a zoomed back wide angle light just to be able to reduce the light amount entering the objective lens. Most of us have seen what happens when too much light is used with the Photon in particular because it is so light sensitive - and the people who use the wide zoom function probably simply don't realise their folly because their eyes cannot see what is watching or scarpering. Whilst the T-20 IR is IMO a very good Ir for rear add-on rigs that need a stack of IR, and can be zoomed wide to match the zoom, the Photon does not need anywhere near as much - because it works in the way CCTV cameras are designed to be used. For anyone who thinks that's biased because I only sell 501b's, things changed when I started working on a dashboard mounted spotter that will soon be available, complete or DIY'r to complete. Such a thing will need a roof mounted IR and I have a bunch of T-20's to fit into magnetic roof mount torch holders. As the spotter device will see a wider field of view, the user will have plenty to gain from zoomed wide IR . If people feel they must have a T-20 IR just because so many others use them: I have not made it generally known that I now carry 3 memory mode T-20 IR's and will price match posted prices - but with RMSD postage included. Sean, There are others who make IR drop-ins to fit your 501b - but a 1 watt ebay one with a DX lens will suit the Photon for subsonic ranges. There's also Ian ir.lights.builds@gmail.com who makes superb quality torches. I am also in the market for an IR set up and after watching the various video that both have put up, I agree with you. I have to admit however, my decision has nothing to do with the quality but rather the back ground commentary.
