Maddaftspaniel
I do the keepering on our sydicate consisting of 3 farms all separate and as a result have free reign over the pigeons. At this time of year I avoid the main drives but get plenty flighting in boundary woods. Was out this afternoon under one of my favourite flightlines and shot 9 woodies for 24 shots. Some high birds but mostly moderate height overhead. Ground was frosty and birds were full of beech mast, barley and acorns. How does a pigeon digest a crop full of acorns...............gizzard must be a powerfull organ!
caeser
I must say , I enjoy standing in a wood at this time of year. There's never an easy shot. I have some great woods to go at so I'm quite fortunate really. The birds are always really high due to the tall trees. Excellent fun. JDog
To answer your question about the digestion of acorns I can tell you that pigeons find it difficult to digest them but they do just get enough benefit from them to make it worthwhile. However if the pigeons diet consists of acorns and nothing else for weeks on end they may suffer from tanin poisoning which can lead to death. I have heard of instances of mass deaths at this time of year from that illness.
