kent
Alkernet oil to bring out the grain (as the dye) and then use whatever proprietary gunstock oil you can get as I assume your not yet ready to start making up your own finish. mereside
my stocks i use a stain first, if you google lion wood stains these are really nice give a good base colour to build on after that alkenet oil or walnut oil and again build this up over a series of weeks /months which will last for years, atb wayne
Bewsher500
I use a dark oak wood stain from Wickes! one coat brings the natural walnut colour up without being too dark apply it over grain sealer (£3 from any decent hardware store or online) sand down to lowest grade sandpaper you can depending on what finish you want I stop around 1000grit Philips Walnut Oil preperation at about £4-6 a bottle few drops in the palms apply once a day for a week once a week for a month once a month for year rub in hard until hands are hot! cal 7888
would you advise rubbing oil in with wire wool to get it into the grain better? and also sanding between coats? cheers
kent
Wire wool in the finest grade is used by many but others believe it can lead to pinning (leaving tiny fragments of steel stuck in the grain)- your call I don't ever do it and hand rub the oil its the heat of friction your looking for from bare palms
cal 7888
i have used an old t shirt to rub it in before but never wire wool. cheers
