I've just bought one.... 1year old in quite good nick, 4 tins of pellets. Nikko mount master 3-9x40 scope 2mags for it....s.w.a.t carry case....it's a 177. Is it any good??? What's it worth??? Thanks guys!!!

hang on, if you've just bought it, surely you know how much it's worth?!

I've always liked the look of the lighthunter but never owned one. second hand market seems to be from 350-450 for a whole kit. how much did you pay?

Fill it to no more than 180 bar (170 may be better) and get it crono'd to find out the power, if it's low on power get it serviced, or do it yourself.

They are excellent rifles, both accurate and light, made at the same premises as Air Arms rifles. Probably worth twice what you paid in top condition.

A .177 will do the job just as well as a .22.

Out of the barrel both calibers will carry the same energy, .177 will probably loose a little down range compared with the .22 but will still have more than enough energy to cleanly kill a rabbit. The big advantage of .177 is that because the pellets are lighter (and maybe have a better air resistance coefficient too) they have a flatter trajectory so you have a greater degree of error in rangefinding. In theory a.22 can be zeroed at 28.5 yards so that the point of impact of the pellet will be within 1/2" between 7 and 32.5 yards, a .177, on the other hand can be zeroed at 37 yards so the 1/2" POI is extended to between 9 and 42 yards (see pictures below). Hope that makes sense.

I only shoot .177 now and have more instant kills than when I shot .22.

I think .177 is the cal. to have at non FAC levels. Like FalconFn, I only shoot .177 now and have done ever since I first changed from .22. You have more than enough killing power for a rabbit, assuming it's running @ close to 12ft/lbs if shooting at SENSIBLE air gun distances. I took one at almost 50yds the other night and that rolled over perfectly.

The one caveat I would say is that if you do any barn shooting for birds, over penetration can be a problem with .177, because of the higher velocity. If you're shooting in and around buildings you can risk a pellet going through the target and damaging something behind it. Hollow pointed ammo helps cut that risk down a bit, but at the expense of range and accuracy

So...you bought a gun that you weren't sure represented good value for money or if it was up to the job you want it for?

:/

Always plenty of information on the forums or google if you need to research before parting with the cash.

I'm sure there are a few people that could tweak it if it needs tuning up a bit and with the money you've saved if you still didn't get on you should still break even if you decided to sell it.

It was a spur of the moment decision.... The guy was desperate for cash....wanted a lot more for it! I had 180 on me....that was it! Take it or leave it! I didn't have my phone in me.... So couldn't google it......it was a moment if wow! When he opened the case!

Well, It's not a recommended tactic for hunting out a bargain, but it's done you proud! That would be a good deal even if stuff needs doing to it.

Took it out today ...... Hate the thing......couldn't hit a white whale on a black background......

Ah. er. oh. Don't give up on it quite yet! (although if you do want to get shot of it, drop me a pm). it could be the scope, but running over a chrono might help. do you know if it's leaking air at all? is the barrel loose?

It's not leaking air...apparently it's only a year or so old..... The scope is fine.... When I used it at work I was in a shirt.... Outside wearing a jacket jumper etc it doesn't sit right at all I'm going to give it another try this afternoon see how it goes ... Several people have poms me about buying it already!
