red_stag88
I was skinning a muntjack head yesterday, and I accidentally knocked its tusks lose, and undoubltedly when it is boiled they will fall out. Can I put them back in and stick 'em with superglue? Cheers
Columbus Polumbus
Red Boil out the head in the usual way get it white and then with some silicone sealant in the cavity, push the tusks back in to the marks on the teeth. Make sure you get em the right way round or it'll look daft Col Pol
red_stag88
Thanks, And also, how the hell do you get the fur off the antlers? I've skinned every where else, thats the only bit that needs doing, or will it come off when I boil it? I have some NaOH crystals to add to the water as well. new to the flock
You beat me to it Col Pol. Redstagg if you figure out how to get the velvet off the horns let me know as I know alot of cariboo hunters that would like to figure that one out. red_stag88
It's not the velvet, but actuall fur that runs up the base of where the antlers protrude.
Elma Fud
Red Stag Boiling out should do the job... Add some washing powder to the water this also helps break down the fat within the skin. Make sure you don't boil the antler. If you do, you will lose the colouring. <---- (Proper spelling NTTF ) If you do get a plain antler without any colouring i.e. shot soon after the velvet has come off. You can add some deep brown shoe polish. Works a treat. Hope this helps. ELMA
Quercus
I wouldn't worry too much about skinning the pedicles, the skin will come away when you boil it. You might want to take a sharp blade and score around the very top of the pedicles. When you boil the head be very careful not to submerge or splash the antlers as you will loose the natural colour. When you clean your head use a scalpel and a pair of tweezers to remove any persistent bits af skin around the top of the pedicles. Hammergun
Wood stain is good on antlers. I would be tempted to use Araldite rather than silicone as silicone isn't very strong and the teeth could get knocked again. Washing soda is probably better than wash powder, but caustic soda (NaOH as RS correctly states) is the best for removing grease and fat and to whiten it (careful not to leave it in too long or it waill start to degrade the bone, and careful handling it). Columbus Polumbus
About that Red. Don't worry about the fur you can use a knife (sharp) to get it off after boiling. I know people use cuprinol to restain antlers if they inadvertantly boil them or you can get the proper stuff from a taxydermist in the snowdonia region if you know what I mean
