Lg1
Had a great time roosting a few in York, lots of birds in the woods presenting some amazing angles. Shot like a pig but enjoyed ever miss, after all! It's been a while. What amazed me was when I opened the crops of the 4 birds I shot, all stuffed to the hilt! Nothing strange about that I agree but what did take me back was all four were stuffed with differnt foods... 1st - stuffed with acorn 2nd - stuffed with berries 3rd - stuffed with beach mast 4th - stuffed with rape I have never seen this before, so diverse! It just shows you that in the York area there is still huge amounts of wild food of varied types... Also i would say it clearly suggests the birds are not flocked up in that area... Instead there spread far and wide, each gorging on there favourite little tipple! The fact that only one bird from four was stuffed with rape shows clearly they are having fun in the woods. Catamong
A good post LG1, it just shows how diverse the Woodies diet actually is..? In my area, rape is their least preferred option, they will (and still are), feasting on the acorns and beech mast, they will then switch to ivy & hawthorn berries, and only after they have been all scoffed will they turn their attention to the rape. It will be well into February before they start on the rape around here, if at all, in fact they may not even touch it at all this Winter... Cat. Catweazle
It amazes me that they can swallow some of the acorns I have found in them, they even manage small chestnuts. They must be able to dislocate their beak somehow.
Continental Shooter
I had the same a couple of weeks back! Shot 8 from 5-6 different flocks while decoying on rape but apart from a couple of them they all had different things to eat. I found; berries, chickweed, acorn, beechmast and only one or two had rape.... Weird stuff is that they all followed the same flight line and never really tried to land on the rape or on the field beside me which had been fresh seeds showing..... they only came ( too) close to have a look at the decoys on the trees. They must have been roosting on the same wood and went out different ways to look for food...
