Anth6568
I know that there are quite a few members on this site that have a huge amount of knowledge in this area. Could anyone tell me what is the best wood to use for a punt gun stock? I was also wondering what would be the best finish; oil or something more modern? Any help would be grateful, thanks. Old farrier
I think wildfowler put a bit on his thread about it when he made his gun worth a look My own thoughts for BL would be to local gun shop and get some realy nice old stocks of some to be destroyed guns and use the walnut Hope that helps All the best Of
Anth6568
Thanks Of, I'll try that. I was thinking about walnut too to be honest. Still pondering about how to treat it though
Big Mat
I'd be looking at walnut/maple/cherry, a hardwood along those lines. Not oak though, seem to recall the oils in it react with steel?
Anth6568
Thanks Big Mat, I'll look at those too.
Wildfowler
For what its worth, I used oak as I have loads of it and its very hard. If you seal the wood properly the tannin wont affect the steel. Similarly, the steel face that the wood is in contact with is painted too. I used 'diamond hard' lacqure to seal and protect the wood so the mud and water doesn't affect it. If you can get some walnut that would make an ideal stock... If I ever change mine i'll make it from walnut.
Anth6568
Thanks for the advice, hopefully it will be walnut. Might even get it chequered.

Also have you thought how much you would charge for a punt gun like yours?
House Boat
I asume you what this punt gun as a wall peace so want it to be aesthetically pleasing rather than a working gun because it realy doesn't mater what the stock is made of for working gun. Anth6568
It will be for field use so to speak, but I get the point about it doesn't matter what type of wood is used. I've got a thing for walnut, as so may other people have now and in the past.
