Sprucey
Method I use is I keep about 7 or 8 pairs of Black socks (Like when you were at school) with my decoys, then when the situation calls for it simply pull them over my Pigeon shells. Job done.
masmiffy
I still use cardboard pigeon decoys. Minimal cost, stackable, lightweight and work a treat when the birds are feeding. Only downside of them is if its very wet. Edited February 20, 2014 by masmiffy
MBW
My first set of hide poles were made from four old stout hazel walking stick shanks with one of those metal screw in hooks bent slightly to deepen the hook stuck in the top and sharpened into points on the other end. They served me well until the ground dried up and it became impossible to get them in, only problem with them was they weren't adjustable unless you were on soft ground and could vary how far they get pushed in. They cost me nothing to make at the time and were a great make do way of having hide poles until I could afford Gucci ones!

FatherandSon
I made my half shell woody decoys out of guttering. Then I painted them with matt paint and detailed then with marker pens. They looked great, but then I sold them when I gave up deeks!!

kent
Right lads ive taken a few ideas from this thread and thanks a lot its going to save me a load of dough, although one question will the silhouette dscoys work for mallards and pigeons? Cheers sw I do geese, widgeon and teal from 9mm ply. If you look at real duck and certainly geese there are nearly always a few on the bank, in deed widgeon all walk out to feed on the grass and teal like the very shallow margins. I paint them up realistic colours then give them a few coats of satin varnish which I then flat off with wet and dry to give them a matt finish. the attachment is a bit of copper pipe flattened and rounded off then fastened to the ply with two 4mm coach screws and nuts. into the tube end I just jab a bit of the plastic coated metal garden canes (about 8" long) into the mud and pop the decoy onto it. 6 full body deeks on a splash as if they are about to walk out with a clear landing zone behind them and say 8-10 silhouettes in the very margins and on the banks / little islands (were they will be visible to incomers) makes for a good spread and takes up less room in the bag. Use longer stakes and you can put them suspended over deeper water (when the sun hits them and casts a shadow the reflection in the water gives the illusion of twice as many) Take care you don't put flat silhouettes out on only one angle as when the duck circle the birds will disappear (to a duck if the birds below you bog off - you don't risk coming in) This can however work in your favour as correctly placed opposing it appears the duck are milling about to circling duck! Though remember you do need some full bodies for when the duck are right over the top (these should represent / present a clear landing / killing zone to incomers) For daylight spreads cut a few poses, feeders, sleepers, standers etc. and even with flatted off finishes watch for unnatural sun reflection (all you need do is pivot any that do to stop it). After sunset you just need ducky shapes that can be seen and even colour has no great bearing, few creatures if any see in colour after dark

kent
http://forums.pigeonwatch.co.uk/forums/topic/169407-homemade-crow-socks/?hl=%2Bcrow+%2Bdecoys Just looked that up! thanks going to keep my eyes open for some suited material for my Greylag deeks as I have no full bodies in them. Most socks have a ring to keep them open and facing into the wind, how do yours work? do most just flap and inflate now and again?

No rings, they inflate with the wind and work very well in fact they work better than any standard FB crow decoy ive used in the past including FUDs there all I use now BB Yes they can be used without the sock but the sock gives the fullness to the decoy, and also gives movement to the pattern Edited March 8, 2014 by Bluebarrels
