So it wasn't the most productive day. So we spent most of it watching brent geese fly over our heads. So what. It beats being stuck indoors.

Thanks to Terry and Dan for organising. And nice to meet some more fellow PW folk.

Monday I was cleaning guns and clothing, the Essex mud was as clingy as Essex girls on a Saturday night, no forget that, it was easier to get the mud off me.

The weather was against us, no wind and not very cold. The birds, and there were plenty of them flew very high, the better shots managed to drop a few Teal and Tufted Ducks, ColinF dropped a big Canada as did poontang if I am correct.

But lets wind back to the beginning, the day was offered by Crouch valley (Dan) and I took up the offer of a whole day for 8 guns , the take up was pretty good and we were soon over subscribed, eventually settling on 12 guns.

The information flow was fast, furious and informative with Dan keeping us updated at all times.

Poontang (Jerry) put pen to paper ( or fingers to keyboard) and gave a really good explanation of Steel shot and chokes, this information was invaluable to all, most had never used Steel Shot before.

Jasongold one of the picker uppers was well informed on the Quarry, not only by sight, how the bird flies, but sound as well. spotting the difference in differing lights is a real skill and brought to light that the homework we undertook and guidance given to us by Dan was much needed and really necessary.

Yes we would all have liked to have shot more birds, and on another day I am sure we would have done, but hey ho these are wild and if they do not want to be there, or want to play game by flying low enough for the lesser shots to bring down, then that is that.

Dan and his team worked hard to make the day a success and their disappointment was clear to see.

On the bright side the Pub lunch was superb as was the service, that was until they made a mistake and did not seem to know how to correct it; this is where poontang stepped in, after waiting a good while for his "GourmetBurger" he took the Pork Loin which soon disappeared before our eyes.

Mentalmac managed to slip in 40 winks after lunch (I reckon it was nearer the hour, he called it a power nap), I got stuck in the mud, and that was before we got to the hide for the first flight, Blowin managed to get up on time and collect me, so it was not all negative.

Would I go again? I think I would but I would take more notice of weather and tides etc, before booking the day.

This first pic was the view in the morning, as you can see - a fine beautiful, warm windless (nearly) morning.

This was the afternoon sunset, you can see from this again it was a clear beautiful afternoon…
Not the best wild fowling weather, but a pleasure to be out anyhow, and was nice to see the birds about, just wish they had of came in a tad lower. Plus the amazing amount of Brent's that would fly so low over your head you could have turned your gun and hit them with your stock if you were allowed.
