clay shooting available out in Crete?

Anyone know any clay shooting available out in Crete? I did a search on here and saw that there was a shooting ground somewhere up in the white mountains in western Crete but it looked more like a hospitality / paid tuition type of thing. They advertise 50 birds for 70 Euro with gun + equip + training. I went to Cyprus a while ago and didn’t see anything about clay shooting and no one there seemed to know of any local grounds. When I got back here a guy that lived there said that there was a ground somewhere near Paralimni. It would be nice to find something that you could just turn up to hire a gun and just shoot until either the barrels got too hot or you had, had enough. I’m going near to Chania but will have a car.

That was the place that I looked at. it would be a place to shooot but seeing as it is a sort of commercial set up I would feel a bit bad at asking them to point me in the direction of another shooting site to consider especially considering the financial situation in Greece. A bit like offering them a knife to cut their own throat with. >> "Don't shoot with us go over the road and give them the money".

There are a couple of shoots in Limosol where you can hire a gun which if i remember rightly cost about 5 euros, also there is a good shoot in Paralimni (near Pritarrus )

that does sporting and skeet. You buy a disc at the shop which gives you 25 or 50 clays, you can also hire guns there aswell.....Also a shoot in Pafos aswell

You're right but they're in Cyprus. The OP wants to know about Crete which is a different island.

Yes. Limasol is on Cyprus but thanks for the input. When I was out on Cyprus I didn't come across any shooting but when we got back Someone said that there was one near Paralimni. I do know that there is a good little bakery shop just under the motorway bridge roundabout in Limasol :)

I was out in Georgioupolis a few years ago and there was a gun club down the road, deserted for the fortnight I was there. The only place I found was up in the hills run by an English guy but seemingly aimed at the tourist market as a have a go type thing. Talk to the locals - they hunt everything without exception. One barman was gleefully showing me his dodgy gun collection on his mobile - mainly old bolt action military rifles mixed in with the odd assault rifle and old rusty shotgun! Aside from that Lake Kournas is good for a day out. And good luck on the mountain roads once you get off the motorways!

Tell me more. I remember driving along a tarmac road on Rhodes and suddenly I was driving along a stoney track road. I thought that I had accidentely turned off of the main road somewhere but the odd sign directed forward. We went through what looked like a farm yard and through an olive grove. Eventually we came back onto the tarmac road on a bend. Similar sort of thing in Cyprus. How difficult is it on Crete?

Not difficult, just scary in places. The motorways are fine - if you are going to be overtaken, pull into the hard shoulder but be aware of broken down or "resting" cars also in the hard shoulder. There are a lot of roadside shrines (a big lot!) and a lot of side of the mountain roads that are a car and a bit wide! It's a lovely place to go though - we're thinking of going back this year.

I know the writer wanted to know about shooting in Crete, but he also said he couldn't find anywhere to shoot in Cyprus so i thought i would enlighten him.....

Yes, Thanks for the input, it all counts. It’s like over here there are shooting grounds all over the place but unless you know where they are then you’d drive right past and not know that you’d gone by. When we were out in Cyprus we were in Protaras and I asked at the hotel if there were any shooting grounds in the area but no one knew of anything local. Again I suppose that if your not into clays or shooting then you probably don’t know anything. It’s like the rifle club that I go to has another building out the back where they hold ballroom dancing and stuff ? And it’s only that we can hear them that we know that they are out there dancing. Damn music beat plays hell with with the target aiming.

When we were out in Turkey I again asked at the hotel reception and they were quite concerned that I wanted to find guns and stuff. They thought that I was wanting to strafe up the local high street or something. Eventually they understood what I wanted and got in touch with the sports department of the ministry in Ankara without any success, Eventually someone at the hotel said that there were a couple of Gunshops in Manavgat. So a lad at reception drew a map for me and off we went to find them. When I found the shops it was interesting the type of guns and ammo that they carried. The problem is I didn’t speak Turkish and they didn’t speak English. A customer in the shop spoke German / turk but we managed to communicate a fair bit by sign and pigeon language. It is quite interesting the shooting camaraderie that is in people and how with a bit of effort. A great deal of sport / fun can be had. It surprised me what hey carried and by the shot sizes. They had loads of real heavy stuff there like sg Ect.

i bet Digweed could shoot clays in Crete from Cyprus

Yeah right. It’s only 450 Miles give or take a bacon sarnie or three. Twenty pounds of solid ball >> ten pounds of powder >> Super, SUPER full choke. Boom and there you go. Well within range. “What would you prefer Sir standards or midis?
