Tollerman
Any ideas regarding cover crop that deer will not eat.We have a real Fallow Deer problem on our shoot .The farmer gave the deer shooting rights to an old friend and will not allow any one else to shoot them. However the numbers that are shot have very little effect on the population overall. Our feeders have all been fortified but we are still looking for a suitable cover crop that the deer will leave alone.we used Sorghum this season but would like to try something else. CharlieT
A deer fence round the plot, electric if possible is the only guarantee and what I do.
Nuke
Salix, the industrial energy crop kind, will as far as I know not be eaten by red deer, found a couple that had starved to death in a plantation a couple of years ago. If it's the same with fallow deer I can't say but I would think it likely. /Markus

Tollerman
Bit of a mixture.Triticale which has a bitter taste, dwarf sorghum which we already know that deer will not eat and millet. The new cover crop will be located near to an existing high seat which hopefully will encourage our stalker to make the most of any opportunity that arises.Electric fences would work but in our part of the country (Essex) it is likely that the equipment necessary would go walkabout. Our farmer had his JCB stolen last week! Sounds interesting. I've not tried millet so will be interested to hear how the mix does. I've grown Triticale in non fenced areas and it held up well and does provide good tall cover for birds lasting well into the winter. Good luck.........
