English sporting course for beginners

Hi guys,

Sorry if this is a stupid question or has already been covered.

Being fairly new to shooting clays I am looking for some guidance. I have just purchased my first shotgun and having only ever shot at the fennes in essex, I am used to just walking up to a stand and shooting and then to a different stand etc.

I am thinking of going to a different ground this Sunday, and they advertise an 80 bird English sporting course. Is this any different from the fennes? Do you have to work round in a certain order etc.

I have also been interested in maybe trying a competition shoot but there doesn't seem to be much info on how to get involved and as a newbie it is all very intimidating

Please don't get me wrong I can handle a shotgun safely etc. so not a complete beginner. But I have only ever shot the fennes or on my uncles farm.

Normally you would do the stands in order, but if there are queue's it is OK to jump ahead and save time hanging around.

Note whether the stands are 8 or 10 targets, some do vary.

Ask the format when you register is the easiest way.

As for competitions check local grounds websites for information, and if you are a CPSA member they will have a list of competitions.

Good luck

Thanks very much. I am not afraid to ask but always good to have a brief idea before I go

Which ground are you thinking of going to?

As Sunday is the only day that the weather looks half decent, I was thinking of heading to the one in leaden Roding, just outside Chelmsford. Have you ever been?

Are you going alone or with someone who has shot before ? It is better to shoot with at least 1 other person, that way, you have someone to push the buttons for you. Can I suggest that you find a stand that you feel you can hit, to start off with. Leaving the harder stands until later into your session. If you have got someone with you, it is not a bad idea to keep your scores, that way you know what you have to do next time to improve. Good Luck and straight shooting.
