sepulchre
Tikka T3 Heavy Varmint barrel in appropriate calibre, great guns, very accurate, with good quality everything - spend serious money on your scope mounts an easily overlooked area of accuracy, .308 not a cheap calibre to shoot, as for a scope I would go for image clarity and lens quality over excessive magnification above x10 or x12 your going to struggle to hold steady at 300m, I try to shoot with the least amount of magnification as poss. If you want to see where your landing shots get a spotting scope If your going to use the gun in the field .308 may cause you some problems with your local police authority, had a right game getting a .243 approved for foxing (west mercia)

Using 14x on my leupold tactical and 16x on my tasco worldclass both are very good for the money and no problems holding still on target. Thinking of a nightforce or sightron for 300+m on the 308. Have a 223 cleared for fox so not a problem. Edited March 19, 2014 by Albert
Wookie
I went for a Remington 700 VSSF (heavy, fluted 26" barrel) in .308win. It's got a 1 in 12" twist barrel and, using 155grn 2156 Sierra Match Kings, can put five rounds into a less than 1" group at 200m. The same load will go to 1000m and I'm planning on using that for Bisley in May. The rifle itself was pretty cheap (compared to some) at roughly £800, with the scope (Leupold 6.5-25x50 LRTT) being about the same. It's a lovely rifle and relatively cheap to reload for; certainly it's cheaper than buying match ammunition at a pound a shot. I'd not want to use the rifle for stalking (but I could) as it's heavy as hell and the calibre is not ideal for long range shooting (6.5x47 would be better for example), but it suits me and it's lovely to shoot. Looks like Remington are top of the list I would like a 1/10 twist to suit the heavier bullet heads what the leupold like on 25x at 300m can you see the bullet holes on the target?. chrisv
Albert, Have a look at the bullets used in the F/TR class in the link below, you may change your mind about insisting on the heavy bullets http://www.dolphinguncompany.co.uk/index.php/be-a-winner Chris

That's the chappie.
rjimmer
My SSG-69 is a really nice piece of kit, with a good quality scope you have a reasonable setup. Otherwise you need to be looking toward the Accuracy Internationals and other specialist rifles, but cost starts rising. All depends what you can afford. I just can't recommend anything else. 5 V-bulls at 600 yrds at Bisley today for 10 shots with Samson 180 grn ammunition. The first shot I aimed off too far to allow for the wind and it went exactly where it was pointed when I squeezed the trigger. Another one I know I pulled. Bewsher500
How serious do you intend to get with this target malarkey? As above, a £100 Parker Hale will get you up and running and will deliver very acceptable results, but you can make those results look pretty tame if you up the anti with a few more zeros after the £ sign. my sentiments exactly!! I picked up a Fultons of Bisley 29" barrelled military mauser in a walnut stock for about £100!! bought a 20MOA rail (don't need it but it was cheaper than a standard rail for some reason!) It wears a 20x40 Optimate which cost me £100 and was kicking around I just finished working up a 168gr SMK load for 600yds and it shoots this: (admittedly only 3 shots but you get the point! ) next up is 178gr AMax and/or 155gr Scenar
Albert 888
This threads quite old now. I have bought a Howa 1500 308 24" stainless varmint barrel 1/10"twist,with an ai bottom metal and mag conversion with a sorted trigger and a 20 moa rail and target knob and bell and carbon stock. I'm currently developing loads with n140 and 155 scenars, then trying the 155g-168g amax. But meanwhile I bought a winchester p14 26" 1-14" twist 308 fultons conversion in a sporterized stock with brindle trigger and brindle peep sights and also a engineered fit pictanniny rail, this rifle owes me less than £200 and is winning me comps at 100-300 m with nato ammo.
