owillingham
I live in rural wales and there aren't any gun shops or ranges near me where I can try out different air rifles, so was hoping for some advice from others who own them. I currently have an S410TDR in .22 and the shot count really gets me down. I brought it for hunting rabbits, but in all honesty I mainly use it for plinking, and having to recharge every couple of mags is a real bind. I don't need a take down rifle, I guess I liked the idea of playing james bond everytime I set it up and put it away but I'd trade that for shot count any day. I know my limitations, and range finding is definitely one of them, I have since brought a laser range finder, but still think that I would be better off with .177 where the tradgectory is flatter, and a slight mis-calculation in distance will have less affect. And I want a rifle with a big air resovoir so that I can keep on shooting without refilling. This is probably the one thing my choice will pivot around more than anything else. After that, I'd quite like a thumbhole stock. I was looking at a review of a BSA r-10 mk2, and that looked quite impressive with a built in regulator, 150 shots in .177 with a 10shot mag. Anyone own one of these? Whats the weight like? I really have no idea what rifles are out there, something I should mention I don't want is anything that has electronics like the daystate airwolf, etc. Which would be well out of my price range anyway. If anyone has a rifle the're pleased with, that has a large shot capacity (please mention how many accurate shots per charge), please let me know so I can go in hunt of reviews etc. If anyone has a used one they want to sell I may also be interested. Many thanks Owen
hawkfanz
my stepson has the new r10,cant recommend it enough,he owned the hw100,and a daystate electronic thiny but prefers his r10 in 177 flavour.
Theskyfox
Just a thought, before you ditch the TDR, have you looked at getting it regulated? it costs about £280 I think, but a regulator will more than double the shot count and make each shot the same FPS. Take a look here for the stats/comparison: http://www.airarmsownersclub.com/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=30278 I've got the TDR-F (with the carbine cylinder on) and don't have it regulated. I find I am recharging every 4 magazines or so which isn't too bad (thats about 40 shots per charge). It doesn't bother me so much because I'm hauling around a 7 litre 300 bar air cylinder too though. -Andrew

Do you know of anywhere I can send it? I like the feel of the rifle (its very compact and light) and would be happy to spend money on it rather than replace it. Theskyfox
Yes, speak to Milbro Sports. Ben Taylor is the guy who does the work. If you speak to them they can give you an idea of what to expect and the costs associated. You basically post the gun off to them and they do it. http://www.milbro.co.uk/ben-taylor-rifles I am considering getting this done myself, but at the moment I'm getting used to the rifle and have found the current shot count adequate. There are a few people on here who have had it done and haven't looked back. -Andrew
anim al
under rated by a lot of folk, but if you dont mind a single shot why not look at a gunpower stealth. plenty of shots and still a tdr cheers al
owillingham
As a few of you have the R10, what can you tell me about the weight etc, for standing shots. I do intend to shoot rabbits, mainly by stalking so need to hold it steady from a standing position. I've seen a couple of videos on youtube, but they seem to favour using a bipod. Obviously any rifle I get will be heavier than the TDR I currently have, but certainly don't want anything excessively heavy for hunting. Its a real pain there's nowhere near me I can go to try them out.
Longbower
Hi , I am out shooting most nights/evenings, at all different types of permissions, so I have a particular requirement in a rifle. If its down to shot count, something with a larger reservoir would be ideal. If you have to climb over gates or go under fences, something lighter may be required. Pick the tool to do the job. Also , A shooting pole/stick will greatly assist you to hold your aim steadier. I use a BSA Scorpion SE Tactical 10 shot. Its not every ones choice, but it works for me, I get five mags per fill. But I have never needed a refill while hunting. I couldn't carry 50 bunnies anyway. Good luck in your search.
timmytree
Does it need to be a PCP? Living in a rural area with few RFDs, probably miles from a source of diving air. Why not consider one of the HW break barrels or even an underlever from HW or AA, no reliance on air, unlimited simple shooting and can be shot off padded sticks with no loss of accuracy, the real bonus is that plinking is so much more satisfying with a traditional springer. HDAV
Where in Wales? There aren't many places that far from civilisation (or an RFD) but sounds like a springer is the answer 500 shots if you take a full tin of pellets out Edited March 15, 2014 by HDAV
owillingham
I don't use a dive bottle, I have a stirrup pump. It only takes a minute to pump my gun as its such as small cylinder (20cm), I know it would take much longer with a higher shot capacity rifle, but on the flip side I'd have to do it less often. I know it seems I'm asking for opposite ends of the spectrum, light and small but with high shot capacity, but really I'm happy for middle ground. I want a pcp repeater as in all honesty I mainly plink and like to shoot rapidly (which is why I hate filling up every couple of mags). You'd think that 15 accurate shots would be plenty enough for hunting, but please bear in mind that the accuracy varies so greatly between such small amount of pressure (its unregulated at the minute), that I shoot about a mag before going out so I'm 100% confident that the pellets are landing where I want them, so after that I'll only get a few shots before I have to start holding under. If I re-filled, I'd have to fire off some more shots to again be certain of my zero (and scare all bunnies away in the process). I have spent the evening looking at having a regulator fitted, or doing it myself as even a few extra shots would make a huge difference to me for hunting. I may end up keeping the rifle for that purpose, but I do feel I would be more accurate with a .177 anyway, and if I'm going to swap for that purpose I may as well find a more suitable gun in general. timmytree
.177 isn't more accurate, just more forgiving with range estimation, you can partially offset that with being more critical with shot placement because of the lightweight pellet. Before you make any decision about your TDR based on the shotcount it may be wise to talk to an Air Arms specialist.Either go to the AAOC and contact bgaltd or google Bond Gun Accessories and talk to Julian about your options. If it helps, I use .177 exclusively for hunting because it gives me the best results over distance compared to .22 despite the slightly lower shot count. owillingham
I realise the calibre doesn't affect the accuracy of the rifle, but I believe it can affect MY accuracy due to my limitations in range finding. Basically I want to find the rifle best suited to my all round needs, am I don't think my current set-up is right for me. I could spend more money on improving what I've got but would still end up with a .22 with comparatively low shot count. If I were to sell the rifle on and put the extra money I would have spent on modifying it together, I expect I should be able to buy another used rifle that's better suited to my needs. I'd just like to hear from different people who own rifles, and their honest opinion on them, pro's & cons etc. Reviews in magazines are useful, but normally based on 30minutes trying them out, whereas people on here who have owned a few different guns, and spent many hours shooting them KNOW their rifles, and know all the little niggles that they wished they could have avoided at the time of purchase. I'm not about to rush out and buy another, but at the same time I'm not aware of the different models out there that would be worth looking at, I need a good starting point, based on solid opinions of those who have used them, then with a bit of luck I might be able to hunt some people down who own them and try one out for myself to get a feel for the rifle. What feels right for someone else might not feel right for me. But if I get lots of people saying that one particular rifle is an excellent all rounder, it will end up top of the list to try.
