VIHTAVUORI POWDER

Recommended Posts

One of the more reliable suppliers of powder and I find THE most consistent from lot to lot. A few recent supply hiccups due to ownership changes but hopefully all behind them now and certainly a powder I use on a regular basis, especially in the current climate. 1kg tubs are initially an expensive `buy in` but in the long run, certainly one of the best value for money extruded stick (not ball) single based powders. I'm not personally a huge fan of the double based `5 series` powders, preferring the single based `1 series` but the both have a strong following, especially in powders with rich reloading recipe availability.

What do you see as the negatives of the double base powders? Just interested, not challenging you .....

I prefer Hogdens H4895 for this bullet weight. Powder is dear nowadays and its not like you want to be getting in a large quantity or firing vast numbers of this type of fast bullets through your barrel so 1 lb tubs are ideal. Long term fan of Viht 160 with heavier deer bullets in the .243 though I see it less than viable cost and storage wise for the foxer.

No fan of 5 series powder, despite the claims I think it substantially shortens barrel life for a bit more speed (which isn't a .243 issue, its plenty fast enough)

Vhit was always consistent batch to batch and hence preferred by many a target shooter, If you just lamping foxes its hard to get through a 1lb tub a season so testing the next 1 lb tub isn't too bad a task.

Brilliant powder and cannot fault bar one insignificant side effect. The powder is heavily graphite'd to aid smooth metering and I personally have seen, plus another member on here, soot forming on the outside of the neck. I only ever neck size so the brass is about a tighter fit in the receiver as you can get. Initially one would assume excessive gas leaking but if you change powder to one that is not coated you don't see the issue.

All the brass neck is clear of the chamber on firing otherwise you will get serious pressure issues as othewise it has no place to expand into and release the bullet. How much of an issue is a sooty neck OD anyhow

Double base is useful when you need to increase performance but don't have much case capacity to play with. For example it's popular with the match rifle shooters trying to push heavy bullets out of a .308 to 1200 yards. Also seems to work better in long barrels that can take advantage of the longer pressure curve,

In a case with plenty of capacity like the .243 (I assume?) it's a bit pointless for most uses.
