Underdog
I think this maybe a youngster from last year! I have enhanced the shots some but it's plumage does not seem pink enough on the underparts and the blue back was kinder grey -ish! What say ye? Underdog. steve_b_wales
Where I work, there's a big oak tree, and everyday, at least 4 nuthatches come down it to feed on the bird table or the seed on the floor.

stubby
so underdog, couple of questions for you if I may Im taking pictures from around 40ft away using a 400mm lens, but I want closer, so should I 1, buy a bigger lens or 2, add a 2x convertor on this one or 3, build a hide closer to the subject cheers also I see you use photobucket too, what code do you use, I generally use the bottom one, but then the pictures on here show up small, yet yours show up at the correct size, if that makes sense Edited April 4, 2014 by stubby

Abacist
so underdog, couple of questions for you if I may Im taking pictures from around 40ft away using a 400mm lens, but I want closer, so should I 1, buy a bigger lens or 2, add a 2x convertor on this one or 3, build a hide closer to the subject cheers also I see you use photobucket too, what code do you use, I generally use the bottom one, but then the pictures on here show up small, yet yours show up at the correct size, if that makes sense You don't say what aperture your 400mm lens is but the 2X converter will halve the aperture meaning that the lens will half as quick because of the reduction in light and the autofocus will not work quickly enough. In my view 2X converters are only any good for fast prime lenses so a F1.8 50mm lens becomes an f2.6 100mm lens which is useable. Its a relatively cheap thing to do but pretty useless for telephoto lenses. Of course the other thing is that the you will not freeze the motion of the bird and the photo will be blurred because you can't get a high enough shutter speed with a small aperture. An 800mm lens is going to cost some serious money with a decent fast aperture. The cheapest and best solution would be getting closer with a hide if you can do it!
